Galerie Zwart Huis inaugurates its new Antwerp venue with the first solo exhibition at the gallery by Antwerp-based artist Nils Verkaeren. ‘El Pulso del Agua’ brings together paintings created during the final three expeditions of his long-term project in Colombia (2018–2026), along the Río Magdalena, Río La Miel and Río Cauca.

Verkaeren’s practice develops through direct engagement with the landscape, where painting becomes a physical and unpredictable act. Rather than depicting these environments, the works emerge from them: canvases are exposed to water, climate and time, allowing the landscape itself to leave its mark. The paintings are not literal representations but traces of experience: canvases are exposed to the elements in the landscape, which leave their imprint.

As summer slowly draws to a close, we’re looking forward to something new.
We’re proud to announce the opening of our second gallery space at Nieuw Zuid in Antwerp, inaugurated with ‘El Pulso del Agua’ by Nils Verkaeren — a new exhibition featuring paintings developed during long expeditions across Colombia and shaped by encounters with rivers, weather and the surrounding landscape.

In this exhibition Colin Waeghe and Stief DeSmet move alongside one another like neighbours who never quite enter each other’s territory yet subtly alter it. In Waeghe’s work the park appears as a quiet construction: hedges that conceal and houses that remain silent. Beneath the surface however something else begins to emerge: moss, discolouration and slow decay as though the world were gradually slipping free from its own order.

Nature is never self-evident in DeSmet’s work either. It is rearranged, displaced and remembered. His works carry traces of what is disappearing while images shift between recognition and estrangement. His practice moves, searches and resists becoming fixed.

The exhibition runs until 20 June. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00.
