Drawing is understood here as a process of transformation. In the work of Anahita Judaki and Astrid Köppe, it does not represent but displaces, alters and brings forth forms that move beyond their point of origin.

ANAHITA JUDAKI draws directly onto wooden panels using images taken from photographs and pornographic films. These visual sources, saturated with narrative and codes, are gradually dissolved through gesture. The line fragments bodies and recomposes them into masses, tensions and rhythms. The image ceases to be readable and becomes a surface of intensities, retaining traces of contact and movement.

ASTRID KÖPPE creates her drawings on pre-enamelled metal panels using hand-drawn and hand-cut stencils, gradually building up each composition through successive layers of enamel, which are fired in a kiln to fuse the colour to the surface. Her forms, situated between geometry and biomorphism, appear to belong to a vocabulary of the living while resisting any stable identification. They evoke processes of growth, proliferation or mutation, yet remain irreducible to classification. Fixed by enamel, the drawing nonetheless preserves a sense of latent movement, as if the form were still in the process of becoming.

Between these two practices, drawing emerges less as a representational tool than as a site of passage. In Judaki’s work, images dissolve into graphic matter; in Köppe’s, line becomes structure in a state of becoming. In both cases, forms do not describe the world: they generate intermediate, unstable and open states.

ORGANIC BODIES brings together two approaches to drawing in which forms are never given, but always in the process of emerging.

SUMMER HITS evokes impacts and summer collisions, occurring precisely where frictions emerge within the White Cube, the contemporary form of the exhibition space. Far from being a neutral container, it becomes a site of encounter where different practices, imaginaries, and temporalities intersect.

Borrowing its title from the popular expression used to describe the songs that soundtrack each summer—mixing recurring classics with fleeting novelties—the exhibition brings together artists who have previously collaborated with LAGE EGAL alongside a newly graduated generation. Like a compilation album, it assembles singular voices whose proximity generates echoes, displacements, and moments of tension.

SUMMER HITS unfolds through a horizontal approach, where works engage in dialogue without being subsumed into a single narrative. Certain forms resonate with one another while others resist; details migrate across works as differences persist. Friction emerges not through direct opposition, but through the coexistence of distinct image regimes, narratives, and materialities.

The exhibition constructs a fragmented narrative suspended between fiction and document, memory and projection. The collisions suggested by the title are not spectacular events but subtle interferences, emerging through proximity, contrast, and the unexpected relationships that take shape within the exhibition space.

Echoing the famous song by The Rolling Stones, the off-site group exhibition GIMME SHELTER III resonates with the selection of works presented by LAGE EGAL (trans. location doesn’t matter), a nomadic gallery based between Berlin and Brussels.

Vincent de Roder’s invitation for this third edition extends the gallery’s fluid identity: a practice of displacement, relocation and the circulation of works rooted in the dynamics of contemporary art.

The selected works display their colours and abandon figuration to surrender to their own visual languages, inviting the viewer to enter the artists’ unique worlds. TOM FRÜCHTL’s raw gradients bleed into one another as if colour itself were under pressure; FRANZISKA REINBOTHE’s distorted frames warp the familiar until recognition gives way to unease; ASTRID KÖPPE’s strange metallic compositions hold light hostage in surfaces that feel both ancient and alien; GONZALO REYES-ARAOS’s deliberately “glitchy” visions short-circuit the image, exposing the fractures beneath; and VINCENT DE RODER’s silent bands and blocks accumulate with a quiet precision that makes the void feel densely inhabited. Together they form a body of work permeated by the tension of an angry world, where everything seems within striking distance — It’s just a shot away, it’s just a shot away. On the verge of collapse. Through the repetition of numerous layers of color and their dilution until they are nearly erased, the pictorial field appears as a stratified structure rather than a fixed plane. The surface of the canvas is not given; it is consciously and meticulously constructed over time, recording both the addition and the removal of layers.

The canvas becomes an interval, an inframince: a space where the material process and perception intersect. The work resists immediacy, unfolding gradually over time and to the sensitive viewer.

Quel bonheur de retrouver Joao dans une présentation de diverses œuvres montrant les différentes facettes de son travail qui, à partir de matériaux rejetés, retire de la matière pour révéler et tracer un nouveau dessin, une nouvelle texture.

J’ai particulièrement aimé les œuvres « sans titre » crées à partir d’emballages Tetra Pak en carton plastifié trouvés dans des chantiers. L’effet est troublant et très beau, comme une dentelle (la photo ne donne pas du tout l’aspect de la réalité de cette oeuvre dans les bleus sombres).

NB LAGE EGAL (l’emplacement n’a pas d’importance) est une galerie indépendante fondée par Pierre Granoux en 2019 à Berlin
