Bill Armstrong's Memorial service

Bill's family invites you to a participate in a service to be held for Bill to celebrate his life on Saturday, 29 August, from 1.30pm–5.00pm at MEMO Music Hall, St Kilda located at the rear of the St Kilda RSL Club, 88 Acland Street, St Kilda.

Please come along and join us as we remember and celebrate Bill’s life!

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, we ask that those who wish to do so instead make a donation to the Australian Jazz Museum, an organisation that was close to Bill’s heart

Vale Bill Armstrong 1929 - 2026
The Australian Jazz Museum is saddened to report the passing of Bill Armstrong on Saturday, August 7th. A true doyen of Melbourne’s recording and broadcasting community, Bill was a pioneer in championing local artists and bands. His lifelong passion for jazz and his generous support of the Museum enriched our work and our community. His like will not be seen again.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, and to the many friends and colleagues whose lives he touched over a long and remarkable career.

Melbourne’s New World-Class Jazz Venue – opening soon!

Michael Tortoni has shaped Melbourne’s live jazz music scene for over three decades. He is best known as the founder of the legendary Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, the current owner of The JazzLab in Brunswick, and the long-time Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Work is close to completion on Michael’s new state-of-the-art venue that is the being built next to The JazzLab. The new club is to be named Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, drawing on the reputation of Tortoni’s original and smaller venue in the Melbourne CBD that was nominated “the world’s best jazz club’’ by Lonely Planet.

Australian Jazz Museum volunteer Con Pagonis recently interviewed Michael at The JazzLab for an article he is writing; and Michael showed him around the new venue next door; still under construction.

Con’s article will be published in the next edition of Ajazz magazine – No. 111 – look out for it in early November.
