The Australian Jazz Museum, located in Melbourne’s south-east at Wantirna, is Australia's leading jazz museum open to the public. With an extensive collection of Australian and overseas jazz resources it pays tribute to the Australian jazz story and charts Australia's significant contribution to the world of jazz both locally and overseas. Through vibrant and exciting displays and temporary exhibi

tions, the Archive celebrates Australia's extraordinary jazz heritage and its rich jazz culture. Being an accredited museum, the Australian Jazz Museum is widely recognized as the premier home for Australia's rich heritage of jazz. Our collection includes oral histories, recorded music, photographs and film, posters, sheet music and instruments. It also maintains files of manuscripts, clippings, and bibliographic references; vintage and contemporary books and periodicals, discographies and encyclopaedias. While the Australian Jazz Museum is dedicated to the preservation of this material we are very enthusiastic about making it accessible to the public. The Museum is a 'living museum' actively involved in local community activities, festivals and jazz workshops. Our premises are used as the rehearsal venue of the Jazz Improvisation Workshops, and the Knox Jazz Orchestra. We offer a range of outreach activities including individual and group tours of the Museum and we actively encourage service groups and members of the public to visit and use this museum. A tour of the Museum's collection provides an insight into our rich jazz history through an assortment of recordings, photographs, posters, magazines, books, clippings, and all manner of ephemera related to Australian jazz past and present.

🎷 Exciting News from the Australian Jazz Museum! 🎶

On behalf of the Australian Jazz Museum, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of our Virtual Museum (VM)!

This has been a long-held goal for AJM, and I’m incredibly proud to have led such a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers to bring it to life 🙌

The VM introduces a brand-new way to explore our collection—making it easier and more intuitive to search, discover, and enjoy what we have. Most importantly, our team has been working tirelessly to digitise the collection, and we’re excited to now share that with you.

Already, you can access:
🎵 Around 38,000 music tracks to listen to
🖼️ Tens of thousands of images, including album cover art
It’s a huge collection, and while we’re still a long way from completing the digitisation, this is an exciting first step.

At this stage, we’d really love your feedback. In IT terms, this is our MVP (Minimum Viable Product)—a no-frills release. If it’s well received, we’ll continue building and adding new features.

👉 Explore the Virtual Museum here: https://ajm.org.au/VM/VM-overview.html
(or find it via our homepage)

Please take a moment to read the overview—it’ll help you get the most out of your search experience.
📩 Feedback is very welcome: [email protected]

Thanks for your support, and happy exploring!

Cheers,
Ian Rutherford
