Queanbeyan Museum The Queanbeyan Historical Museum is located at 10 Farrer Place Queanbeyan. The museum is open Saturday and Sunday afternoons 1-4pm. Take the journey with us.

The museum will not be open over the Easter and Christmas holidays. The Museum has a strong focus on the history of Queanbeyan and surrounding district, with a broad collection of over 5,000 items that includes furniture, textiles, technological objects, costumes, pictures, maps, objects, and photographs. There is currently an active programme of changing exhibitions with regular opening hours and

regular events. Explore

The Indigenous people before Europeans arrived

How did Queanbeyan develop? How did we enjoy ourselves in early Queanbeyan? Bushrangers and Larrikins

The Museum was opened by the Queanbeyan & District Historical Museum Society Inc. in 1969. It is currently operated by the Society in partnership with the Queanbeyan-Paleranf Regional Council. QDHMS Inc. The Society meets regularly and publishes an historical journal, Quinbean. Contact

Riches beneath the Flat – A history of the Lake George Mine at Captains Flat.
A working bullock, Captain, could be found on the flat in the middle of town having a feed on most days. Hence the name Captain’s Flat.
Big Bill’s Captain’s Flat Hotel employed eight barmen from 6am to 6pm and 10 barmen on Saturdays. With a monopoly, Big Bill new how to charge with a dozen beer costing 23 shillings.
The flat was connected to Port Kemble by rail, 168 miles away. Thirty-eight passengers boarded at Captain’s Flat and another 44 joined at Bungendore for a Christmas trip to Sydney in 1939.
With the Flat in danger of closing Sapper wrote:
“One man believes it will not die
The fellow, Tom Kerr
Who says that he’ll be the last to leave.”’
Ross Mainwaring’s 100-page book “Riches beneath the Flat” is available for $15 cash only from the Queanbeyan Museum on Farrer Place. The museum is open to the public Saturday and Sundays 1 to 4pm. We have a limited number available so make sure you don't miss out.

The mural at the museum shows the original Royal Hotel on Shamrock Lane by artist Margaret Hadfield, from photographs held at the museum. The license and the name were transferred to the site of the Byrnes Hotel on the corner of Monaro and Crawford Street, which then was re-named the Royal Hotel in 1870. It was rebuilt in 1926 and currently celebrating their 100th birthday.
