Founded in 1985, M16 Artspace is an inclusive organisation that supports a thriving arts community of emerging and established artists, writers and curators of any age, background or culture. We present high-quality exhibitions from both emerging and established artists and curators from Canberra, interstate and overseas. We are partially supported by the ACT Government for our gallery program. To

day, M16 Artspace runs three gallery spaces, manages 31 artist studios and houses five arts organisations that offer art classes. With new exhibition blocks beginning their cycle every four weeks, it is an ideal place to experience art in Canberra.

Recognising Yourself in a Lineup | Messengers Youth Program

Recognising yourself in a lineup’ is an exhibition by participants from Messengers, which is a visual arts based program for vulnerable youth. Their artworks are based in pop culture and have become metaphors and vehicles to explore q***r identity, gender diversity, intergenerational trauma and their lived experiences of mental illness.

✨ M16 Artspace Drawing Prize Spotlight: First Nations Artist Award ✨

We’re proud to highlight the First Nations Artist Award, a dedicated prize within the M16 Artspace Drawing Prize that celebrates the outstanding contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to contemporary drawing practice.

Proudly supported by M16 Artspace, this award recognises one First Nations artist with a generous cash prize of:

🏆 $2,000

The First Nations Artist Award acknowledges the strength, diversity and innovation of First Nations artistic practices, and provides an opportunity to celebrate artists whose work brings unique perspectives, cultural knowledge and creative excellence to the Drawing Prize.

We look forward to seeing the breadth of submissions this year and the many ways First Nations artists continue to expand and redefine the possibilities of drawing.

The Canberra Art Workshop (CAW), located in the M16 Artspace, Griffith and the Belconnen Arts Centre, is a thriving studio hub which welcomes all artists, from beginners to practicing professionals. All have a genuine passion for art and learning. Testamur 8 is CAW’s annual exhibition that celebrates the creative time we spent together and the art we made during the last year.

✨ M16 Artspace Drawing Prize Spotlight: Highly Commended ✨

We’re shining a light on the Highly Commended Prize of the M16 Artspace Drawing Prize. Proudly supported by Delta Cleaning, this award recognises one artist with a generous cash prize of:

🏆 $1,000

The Highly Commended award has recognised a wonderful range of artists and approaches to drawing over the years. In 2025, Rmsina Daniel was awarded Highly Commended for Processional Way, while in 2023, Jenny Herbert-Smith received the award with sculptural artwork, Through the Quarries with a Hop, Skip and a Jump.

We’re excited to see what this year’s artists bring to the prize, and the many different ways drawing can be explored, interpreted and pushed beyond the page.

A sincere thank you to Delta Cleaning for their generous support of the Drawing Prize and for helping us celebrate and support artists through this award. 💛

CHUTESPACE | Ode to the Masters

Christina Currey

This small sculptural work is an Ionic column carved from balsa wood. Chosen for its light tone and malleability, the material evokes the white marble of Greco-Roman architecture while emphasising process and touch. The work pays homage to the master artisans whose craftsmanship has endured as a source of study and inspiration for millennia.

'Echoes of Nature and Self' brings together landscapes, animals, and expressive human‑face paintings created over several years. Through mixed media and textured surfaces, her works explore emotional states reflected through nature and portraiture, inviting viewers into a quiet dialogue between the outer world and the inner self.

✨ M16 Artspace Drawing Prize Spotlight: Main Prize ✨

We’re excited to highlight the Main Prize of the M16 Artspace Drawing Prize. Proudly supported by the Tall Foundation, the Main Prize is awarded to one artist, with a generous prize of:

🏆 $10,000

In 2025 Surya Bajracharya took home the main prize with his work Margaret and Frazer Fair, and in 2023 Alexander Sarsfield won with the moving ceramic work, Me, When I.

We’re looking forward to seeing the many different ways artists approach drawing this year!
