Built in the 1840's, the historic Rust-en-Vrede art center (NPO) houses an art gallery, cafe, clay museum, contemporary ceramics and various art studios. Art exhibitions and cultural events (including art talks, walkabouts, artisan markets, music evenings and poetry readings) are hosted regularly.

Over the past twenty years, Theo Paul Vorster's colourful and expressive lino prints have found homes in private collections across South Africa and beyond. While he occasionally explores other media, lino printmaking remains at the heart of his artistic practice.

This was one exhibition I simply did not want to miss. Linocut printing is a medium I had never encountered before, but from the promotional images on social media, I knew Theo’s attention to detail, storytelling and interpretation would leave an impression.

Two weeks ago, I rolled into Rust-en-Vrede to experience the exhibition for myself. The artwork exceeded all my expectations. I had the opportunity to see not only the finished prints, but also the lino blocks from which these remarkable prints were created and then converted into one-of-a-kind art pieces themselves.

Meeting Theo, a local artist from Stellenberg, and his wife, Janine, was an absolute privilege. They are both incredibly warm and welcoming and generously took the time to explain what inspires Theo, the painstaking linocut process and the dedication required to achieve perfection in every print.

The exhibition runs until 13 September 2026 and is most definitely worth a visit.

Join us on Saturday 29 August '26 at 10h00 for an artist-led walkabout with exhibiting artist . Meet the artist and learn more about the thoughts behind his linocut works and the making thereof.

At 11h00 we will have another walkabout in the Clay Museum led by Monica Monaia of the TazzinArt project, wherein she will share insights into the concepts behind the espresso cups created by their Italian, Mexican and South African makers.
