Edoardo Villa’s steel editions begin not with a mould, but with construction—planes cut, tubes shaped, edges aligned and joints welded.

Across these mature works, repetition never produces sameness. Each sculpture retains its own presence, with subtle shifts in line, balance, and form giving every work a distinct character.

Within 'Hedonic Adaptation: Structures of Survival and Repair', these works reveal Villa at the height of his sculptural language, transforming industrial steel into forms that feel at once architectural, bodily and deeply individual.

HOME — What photographs remember:

Home is not only a place. It can be a room in which a song begins; the company that gathers backstage; what is carried between cities; the movement through which a community remembers itself.

For World Photography Day 2026, whose theme is HOME, Peffers Fine Art turns to the DRUM Archive—one of the most vital visual records of twentieth-century African life. These photographs by Bob Gosani and G.R. Naidoo locate home in intimacy, music, movement and collective life.

We’re pleased to share a recent feature on our current exhibition, 'Hedonic Adaptation: Structures of Survival and Repair' in Die Burger.
The article, pictured below, was part of Wednesday, 12 August 2026's issue.

The exhibition brings Edoardo Villa’s welded steel sculptures into dialogue with Tshepo Sizwe Phokojoe’s hessian constructions, exploring adaptation, survival and the ways we learn to live with what cannot be undone.

'Hedonic Adaptation' is on show and a part of HEAT 2026, Cape Town's annual Winter arts and culture festival.

Presented as part of HEAT 2026, Ctr! Z, Hedonic Adaptation asks how inherited structures become familiar- and how slow looking might help us hold them differently.
The exhibition explores the contrast between weight and fraying, monument and shelter.

Please join us for a public conversation on Saturday 8 August,
'Steel, Cloth and the Work of Repair', which
brings artist Tshepo Sizwe Phokojoe into dialogue with Nkgopoleng Moloi and Andrew Lamprecht.

Taking Edoardo Villa's sculptural legacy as a historical counterpoint, the speakers consider inherited structures, hessian and steel, the welded and sewn seam, slow looking and the possibilities of re-reading South African modernism through contemporary practices of shelter, migration, vulnerability and care.

Each of the eight Wa Lehulere/Mgudlandlu pairings is presented in matching wooden tapering box frames. A subtle highlight beadline runs along the narrow top edge of each pair, making clear which works belong together.
These colours were chosen by Kemang Wa Lehulere from a Gladys Mgudlandlu painting. Each colour was matched to her original palette, allowing a quiet chromatic trace to enter the otherwise monochromatic pairings.

'Sabela Uyabizwa' brings works by Gladys Mgudlandlu into dialogue with new responses by Kemang Wa Lehulere.

The exhibition’s title may be understood as a summons: "respond, you are being called." Across eight pairings, that summons becomes a visual structure. Mgudlandlu’s compressed fields of mark-making, memory and abstraction are answered by Wa Lehulere through drawings that open, disperse and reconfigure them.

We encourage visitors to experience the exhibition in person at Peffers Fine Art, where the works can be intimately observed in relation to one another.

Tomorrow evening (18:00-19:30) at Peffers Fine Art, Kemang Wa Lehulere joins Athi Joja for a public conversation around Sabela Uyabizwa, the current exhibition bringing the work of Gladys Mgudlandlu into dialogue with new responses by Wa Lehulere.

This is an opportunity to hear directly from Wa Lehulere, alongside Joja’s critical perspective, in the space of the exhibition itself.

Athi Mongezeleli Joja () is an art critic, academic, theorist and writer whose work focuses on modern and contemporary South African art, anti-apartheid cultural histories, Black aesthetics, art criticism and critical race theory. He has written for publications including Mail & Guardian, Contemporary&, Africanah and Artforum, and is a member of the art collective Gugulective.

On Saturday morning, 13 June at 11:00am, join Kemang Wa Lehulere for an artist walkabout through the exhibition. This more intimate gallery session offers a chance to spend time with the works, their references, and the exhibition’s central dialogue between Mgudlandlu’s visual worlds and Wa Lehulere’s contemporary responses.

Movement, memory and public space:
Ahead of the presentation of our upcoming exhibition, 'Sabela Uyabizwa' (opening 23 May), we look at David Koloane’s 'Baggage' (2013). The late Johannesburg pioneer distils the weight of daily life into a terse gesture, evoking the psychological burdens carried by Black urban residents.
