GALLERY LAUNCH & EXHIBITION OPENING
Black Modernism: Between Abstraction and Spirit

Today, Saturday 6 December 2025
10h00–14h00

First Floor, Radio House
92 Loop Street, Cape Town City Centre

Join us for a glass of bubbles as we celebrate both the exhibition and the opening of our newly refurbished gallery space.

The exhibition brings together a focused constellation of works from the 1940s to the late 1990s by Peter Clarke, Dumile Feni, Sydney Kumalo, Ezrom Legae, Ephraim Ngatane, Helen Sebidi, Lucky Sibiya, Gerard Sekoto and their peers, alongside “Black-modern adjacent” artists including Cecil Skotnes, Edoardo Villa and Maggie Laubser. The exhibition traces how these artists negotiated form, spirit and lived experience under apartheid – and how their visions continue to reverberate in the social and political realities of today.

RMB LATITUDES ART FAIR
SPECIAL PROJECT

ESSAY: Tracing Modernist Lineages
A special presentation of drawings by the late Sydney Kumalo, whose works on paper reveal a vital and often overlooked aspect of his artistic practice.

In partnership with RMB Latitudes, Peffers Fine Art also presents a rare selection of charcoal and pastel drawings by Sydney Kumalo as part of the fair’s Special Projects section. Titled Tracing Modernist Lineages, this presentation reveals the powerful draughtsmanship of one of South Africa’s foremost modernists.

Though Kumalo is best known as a sculptor, his drawings offer a crucial insight into his creative process—merging spiritual symbolism, ancestral form, and formal innovation. Spanning the 1970s to early 1980s, these works on paper reflect his sculptural language in two dimensions, often acting as studies for major commissions or independent meditations on form and presence.

From intimate figures and ritual gestures to bold studies for monumental public works, Kumalo’s drawings embody a profound fusion of traditional African aesthetics with modernist abstraction. Together, they speak to a career rooted in spiritual resilience and a deep engagement with the human condition.

Join us this weekend at the RMB Latitudes Art Fair

This focused presentation features rare and evocative photographic works by some of South Africa’s most celebrated documentary photographers—Ernest Cole, Bob Gosani, Alf Kumalo, GR Naidoo, Jürgen Schadeberg, and Paul Weinberg.

The images capture the vibrant cultural life of Sophiatown, a crucible of music, politics, and resistance in apartheid-era South Africa.

Through portraits of jazz legends such as Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, and Winston Mankunku, and dynamic scenes from township theatres, jazz clubs, and street corners, this presentation honours the photographers who bore witness to a community’s defiant creativity and unbreakable spirit.

From the powerful photojournalism of Ernest Cole to the intimate backstage moments captured by Bob Gosani, this exhibition is a tribute to an extraordinary cultural epoch and the photographers who immortalised it.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION

BACK O’ THE MOON
at the Journey to Jazz Festival

Back O’ the Moon is a photographic exhibition that draws its title from the legendary Sophiatown shebeen where South African jazz greats—such as Dolly Rathebe—mingled with pioneering photographers like Bob Gosani. This project seeks to foreground the powerful synergy between musicians and photographers during a defining period in South Africa’s cultural and political history, presenting a compelling visual narrative of resistance, dignity, and creativity under apartheid.
