Join us for the opening of Kabhi Ram Banke Kabhi Shyam Banke (Sometimes You Are Ram, Sometimes You Are Shyam), an exhibition by brothers Daneel and Kiveshan Thumbiran. Daneel Thumbiran Kiveshan Thumbiran

Drawing on Hindu scripture, history and visual culture, the artists explore identity, culture and belonging as South African Indians navigating post-democratic South Africa and as individuals negotiating their place in the larger world.

Together, their practices form a dialogue between identity, culture and belonging - two perspectives brought together in an attempt to understand where they come from, where they stand, and where they belong.

AVA 100 | Building Common Space for Artists

It’s the last week to visit our 2026 Members Exhibition, on view until 08.10.26.

In our Main Gallery, three groups of artworks come together. The first explores magnificent representations and reimaginings of the natural world. Alongside them, are works that use figuration to tell human stories, both tragic and joyful. Further along, you will find artworks that interrogate the symbolism of objects and materials, reflecting on the complexities of the human condition.

This intensive two-day programme is designed to empower new and emerging artists with the critical information and skills required to manage their careers in the visual arts. You will learn how best to engage directly and confidently with market platforms and sector role players, learn how it operates, and develop professionalism in your practice.

AVA 100 | Building Common Space for Artists

In our 2026 Members Exhibition a wide range of work finds a home in our long Gallery. 

On one side, a grouping of works turns towards the object—its qualities, meanings, and symbolic and material manifestations.

On the other, a selection of photographic works is accompanied by a small intervention exploring augmented reality.

Together, the works reflect the breadth of practices within the AVA community, creating a space for different approaches, materials and ideas to exist alongside one another.

AVA 100 | Building Common Space for Artists

Rather than adhering to a single, overarching theme, our 2026 Members Exhibition unfolds in distinct chapters across our five gallery spaces — offering a rich variety of forms, media, and perspectives from artists at all career stages.

In our Front Gallery, materiality and abstraction enter into a dynamic conversation. The works on view reframe familiar textures and push the boundaries of traditional abstraction, contributing to a vital dialogue surrounding material practices across the continent today.

The date of the AGM has been postponed to Tuesday, 10 November at 6pm out of respect for a personal bereavement in the family of our Treasurer.

The AGM will begin at 6pm at the AVA Gallery, 35 Church St, Cape Town C*D.

Following the AGM, please join us for a presentation by a guest speaker, Mary Corrigall, Art Writer, Adviser and Founder of HEAT Festival, who will deliver a focused address titled: From Visibility to Value: The Current Status of the African Art Market.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night to celebrate AVA 100, an exhibition dedicated to creating common space for artists.

The gallery was filled with such incredible energy, connection and community — a beautiful reminder of what the AVA is built around.

A warm thank you to Andrew Lamprecht for his opening remarks.

Our 2026 Members exhibition brings together 100 artworks by our current members, celebrating the artists who have shaped AVA’s history alongside the emerging and independent voices building their creative journeys today.

The exhibition is on view for two more weeks, until 08.10.26.
