Join us tomorrow morning for an insightful artist-led walkabout of Cairn, a group exhibition by the collective Micro.Exhibits — featuring artists Josly Liebenberg, Geneve Potgieter, and Lelani Nicolaisen.

Centering the metaphor of the cairn—a communal stacking of stones along trail routes—the exhibition explores how small, empathetic acts aggregate to build enduring social and environmental connections. By treating each artwork as a stone in a collective beacon, Cairn invites us to step into active stewardship of our natural world.

Sequins/Sequence, a solo exhibition by Ashley Walters

Sequins/Sequence is a long-term photographic project exploring the social and cultural life of Latin and Ballroom dance in the Western Cape. Developed through years of sustained engagement with the dance community, the work looks beyond performance as spectacle to the gestures, relationships, and expressions through which dance is lived and shared. Rather than isolating decisive moments, the photographs dwell within movement itself, revealing dance as a collective practice shaped by discipline, repetition, and celebration. Together, the images unfold as a visual sequence that considers photography not simply as a record of performance, but as a way of revealing the social worlds that movement creates.

Please join us this Thursday as we celebrate the opening of The Theatre of the Yellow Rock Fort, a solo exhibition by Kristen McClarty Kristen McClarty

McClarty’s practice draws on the idea that lived experience lingers in a place as residual energy, mounting up as a palimpsest on the environment. Central to this exhibition is a specific site along the South Atlantic shoreline, The Yellow Rock Fort, where she captures the play of shadow and light, translating these fleeting marks onto woodcut. Extending her process into sculpture and installation, she translates moments from her interaction with the site into a tableau of elements supporting an ongoing narrative of play.

Centering the metaphor of the cairn — a communal accumulation of stones placed along trail routes — this group exhibition explores the cumulative power of small, empathic acts in fostering enduring social and environmental connections.

By positioning each artwork as a single stone contributing to a collective beacon, Cairn invites viewers to become stewards of nature, caringly building a legacy of conservation for future generations.

Deadline extended to 10 August.

This is a reminder to apply to our Open Call for our 2027 exhibition programme — we’ve extended the deadline to 10 August 2026 for those who missed it!

We are looking to support exhibitions that expose new works, feature a wide range of media, highlight marginalised histories, experiences, and/or artistic practices, and confront social challenges. Proposals will be considered by a selection committee composed of AVA board members and invited panellists.

A reminder to apply to our Open Call, inviting proposals for our 2027 exhibition programme. Submissions close on the 31 July 2026.

We are looking to support exhibitions that expose new works, feature a wide range of media, highlight marginalised histories, experiences, and/or artistic practices, and confront social challenges. Proposals will be considered by a selection committee composed of AVA board members and invited panellists. 

We welcome both solo and group exhibition proposals. Early career artists and curators, womxn artists and curators, and those from historically disadvantaged communities, as well as creatives working with digital and time-based media, are strongly encouraged to apply.
