Our latest Alcove Artist, Jacinthe Demmert (), is a textile artist from the Haida Nation. She was raised in Alaska and learned the art of Haida basketry, form-line, and woodcarving from both her mother and father respectively. She currently resides in Shoreline, WA.
Jacinthe’s process for creating this mat involved gathering Alaska yellow cedar bark from Prince of Wales Island. She next dyed a portion of the bark first pink and then blue to create a luminous
periwinkle shade. The mat was then woven with contrasting bark, natural yellow and periwinkle, to create a beautiful pattern. She added a border of twined western cedar to complete the work. Jacinthe’s lifetime of weaving and working with natural materials has taught her balance, connection and intuition.
You’ll also find a collection of Jacinthe’s amazing cedar bark woven earrings in the shop! Stop in to see these remarkable pieces in person.

Just in: we are now stocking new rugs from a store favorite, .tenjung! A series of board games have inspired Studio Tenjung’s new collection, “Play Date”. In the spirit of play and experimentation, the studio highlights a lesser-known Tibetan rug-weaving technique called Boorma that uses rods of varying thicknesses to create high and low piles as well as flat sumak weaves to create a more dramatic surface relief. From Rachel: “This work is still evolving. With my more chemical-based images I have been embracing

’s exhibition “A Living Legacy” marks the museum’s seventieth anniversary, bringing together eight
artworks—all acquired in 2022 and on view at the museum for the first time. Amoako Boafo’s “Three Slices “is one of the striking works on display. This artist’s colorful, large-scale portraits celebrate Black subjectivity, self-fashioning, and joy. Boako uses a distinctive finger-painting technique which gives the
skin of his subjects a textural richness and complexity that contrast with the graphic flatness of their surroundings.
Want to learn more about this up-and-coming artist? Stop in the Store to check out “Amoako Boafo,” the first monograph to comprehensively examine the artist's career to date.
