THE IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE: Inside the Alcatraz Mystery, 64 Years Later
On the night of June 11, 1962, the jagged silhouette of Alcatraz Island was swallowed by the dense, freezing fog of the San Francisco Bay. Inside the walls of America’s most secure federal penitentiary, guards conducting their routine headcounts saw what appeared to be prisoners Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin fast asleep in their cots. It wasn't until the following morning that the terrifying truth shook the nation: the faces on the pillows were masterfully crafted dummies made of soap, toilet paper, and real human hair. The real inmates were gone, triggering a mystery that remains unsolved to this day.
The audacity of the escape relied on a year of meticulous, low-tech engineering. Operating from adjoining cells, the trio utilized sharpened spoons, discarded saw blades, and a makeshift drill constructed from a stolen vacuum cleaner motor to chip away at the salt-rotted concrete surrounding their ventilation grates. Once the holes were wide enough, they gained access to a hidden, unguarded utility corridor behind their cellblocks. There, they set up a secret workshop where they used over fifty stolen rubber raincoats and contact cement to construct a makeshift inflatable raft and crude life vests, using a musical instrument called a concertina to inflate their vessel.
On that fateful June night, they crawled through the vents, scaled the prison's plumbing pipes to the roof, and slipped down a bakery exhaust pipe to the shoreline. They launched their fragile raincoat raft into the pitch-black, treacherous waters of the Bay, and vanished into history.
The aftermath sparked one of the most intensive manhunts in American history. While the FBI officially closed its file in 1979, concluding that the men could not have survived the hypothermic, swift-moving currents, the U.S. Marshals Service keeps the case active to this very day. Whether the cold waters of the Pacific claimed them or they managed to pull off the ultimate vanishing act remains the greatest prison break mystery of all time.
