🕯Curator’s Statement🕯
As the world watches and responds to the genocide of the Palestinian people, this year’s exhibition theme, Bearing Witness, opens a space to reflect on the impact of this ongoing trauma on personal, national, and international levels. SOMArts’ annual call for proposals invites artists to center on the notion of creation as resistance, by proposing traditional and contemporary altar installations that honor, celebrate, and mourn those who have perished in Palestine. The call, of course, welcomes altars and installations that honor personal loved ones as well.

📣 Urge Your Representatives To Oppose The 58% Cut To CA Arts Spending!!️

Joint Call to Action from and :

Governor Newsom's revision of the 24-25 California Budget includes a $10M cut to the California Arts Council and the elimination of the $12.5M to launch the Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund. These cuts represent an unacceptable 58% cut to funding for local arts programs.

Send a letter to the Governor and your State Assembly Member and State Senator, urging them to oppose these measures and restore the modest funding. You can customize your message to let them know how state arts funding impacts your practice, livelihood or community.

QCC presents "In Solidarity: Q***r and Trans Artists for a Free Palestine"
Opening reception, June 7, 6–9 PM PST

➡️ To learn more and RSVP, visit: https://somarts.org/event/insolidarityopening/

On view at SOMArts between June 7–29, the Q***r Cultural Center () presents the collaborative mural, "In Solidarity: Q***r and Trans Artists for a Free Palestine" as part of their 27th Annual National Q***r Arts Festival. BLOOM Collective and xtal Azul are inviting community members to stand in solidarity with Palestine, as there can be no “business as usual” during Pride Month while the genocide continues in Gaza.

"In Solidarity: Q***r and Trans Artists for a Free Palestine" affirms that q***r and trans liberation are fundamentally intertwined with Palestinian liberation, Indigenous liberation, and global land back movements. This collaborative mural offers space to gather in solidarity and mourning to remember, honor, and call the names of Palestinian martyrs.

➡️ Entry to the Main Gallery is free during open hours:
Thursday, 3–7 PM PST
Friday, 12–7 PM PST
Saturday & Sunday, 12–5 PM PST

➡️ Event ticket information:
Events are free for Palestinians and others directly impacted by the ongoing genocide. Attendees are asked to contribute a sliding scale donation between $10–$100, no one turned away for lack of funds. Larger donations will offset the cost of other attendee tickets. 50% of ticket sales will go toward QCC programming and the remaining 50% will be donated to the Muslim Alliance for Gender and S*xual Diversity (MASGD), a mutual aid network supporting q***r and trans Palestinians in Palestine.

Founded by renowned San Francisco artist and curator, René Yañez, SOMArts’ Día de Los Mu***os combines traditional ofrendas or altars with the visual language of contemporary art installation, to create a multigenerational space for remembrance. Continuing the legacy of René’s work are co-curators Rio Yañez and Bridgètt Rex who envision a Day of the Dead presentation that celebrates the holiday’s Mexican roots while calling for all cultures around the globe to honor the dead together in solidarity.

Lara Aburamadan’s “تبقى ذكرى — Remains A Memory” is currently on view in the Ramp Gallery through May 23.

This show is a still photo collection from Gaza City, encapsulating a place that holds stories of the land and the sea.

Within the frames, serene moments unfold against a backdrop that longs for genuine peace—a rarity in the artist’s hometown.

“‎ذكرى — Remains A Memory” explores the transformation of memories of home shaped by the relentless impact of war, transitioning from tangible reality to the ethereal realms of daydreams and nostalgia.

Having lived in exile for years, Aburamadan is left pondering the uncertain path ahead, questioning the fate of a Gaza that clings to memories of people and places that don’t exist anymore.

Gallery Hours
