If you're gonna ask someone "would you love me if I was a worm” objectively, Vivid is the best place to do it. Go underground and get-worm sized at our latest exhibit.

Feeding time always brings out the best in our penguins. In honor of this Saturday's penguin feeding with Golden State Valkyries player Justė Jocytė, we're highlighting a few colony members we think would make our starting lineup.

Big news: Phoebe Bridgers new album Lost Weekend is debuting inside our planetarium dome, ahead of its worldwide release on August 14 via Dead Oceans.

For three nights only, each listening session pairs the album with an original visual experiences: a dome show from night-sky photographer Babak Tafreshi Photography.

Just a heads up — this is a listening event, not a live performance, so Phoebe won't be in attendance.
In partnership with Spotify. Get your tickets before they sell out: https://tickets.calacademy.org/lostweekend.

No thoughts, just fish (and smooth jazz).

Take a much needed break and admire the beauties that call our Amazonian flooded forest home. Feel better? Us too. 😌

These creatures might look like they're from another planet, but they're actually our deep-reef neighbors 🪸.

Cal Academy researchers recently returned from Palau, where they've spent nearly a decade working alongside the local scientific community to monitor the area's delicate reef ecosystems.

On this expedition, the team retrieved 21 Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS): artificial habitats that create a concentrated record of local biodiversity. The results? Thousands of specimens, dozens of new-to-science species, and eight years of temperature data shedding light on one of the ocean's least understood environments.

Sure, this work was carried out an ocean away, but the specimens are here in SF where they'll be added to our prolific collections used by researchers all over the world! It's a collaborative effort: our partners at Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History are generating the DNA sequences, while we lead the analyses here at the Academy to better understand the region's biodiversity.
