The gallery represents the work of Robert Adams, Sophie Calle, Lee Friedlander, Adam Fuss, Nan Goldin, Katy Grannan, Richard Learoyd, Richard Misrach, Nicholas Nixon, Alec Soth, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, and works closely with the estates of Diane Arbus, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Peter Hujar, and Garry Winogrand. In recent years, the gallery has expanded its roster to include multidisciplinary artists suc

h as Elisheva Biernoff, Mel Bochner, Kota Ezawa, Martine Gutierrez, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Christian Marclay, Wardell Milan, Richard T. While photography has been a consistent through-line of our exhibitions and more than 70 publications, it is far from the whole story. Many exhibitions have featured artists whose work is not strictly, or not at all, photographic: Mel Bochner, Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Agnes Martin, and Sol LeWitt among others. Fraenkel Gallery maintains long-established relationships with museums, private collectors, and corporations around the world, and welcomes the experienced collector as well as those just beginning.

Opening next week, Lee Friedlander: Maria presents a seven-decade portrait of the artist’s wife, muse, and most recurrent subject. In approximately 50 photographs, the exhibition chronicles the unfolding of the couple’s relationship, while simultaneously charting the evolution of Friedlander’s artistic vision.

Alec Soth is one of the artists featured in Niagara Falls: Mist and Majesty, on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. until September 20, 2026. Through approximately 20 works, the show highlights evolving perspectives about the falls, from 19th-century prints, drawings, and photographs to contemporary work. The exhibition marks the bicentennial of celebrated landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church, whose iconic panorama "Niagara" (1857), anchors the presentation. Soth’s photograph, from his series A Pound of Pictures, reveals “the people—both resident and visiting—who now populate a place radically altered from the wild beauty of Church’s painting,” the Gallery writes.

In 1987, Richard Misrach stumbled across an artists event in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The gathering featured "a group of people in color-coordinated outfits playing croquet with 6-foot balls, 15-foot wickets, and mallets in the form of pickup trucks with tires mounted on the front," as he described in a 2019 article for California Sunday Magazine. Years later, the artist returned to photograph what would later become Burning Man. He visited the event yearly until 1998, before it turned into what he called an "extravaganza." Misrach writes, "I was much more interested in its modest origins, when it was an unexpected gathering of artists who were creating a community on a vast, empty, vegetation-less expanse."

On view through May 2028, Phoenix Art Museum brings Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller's "The Instrument of Troubled Dreams​" to Arizona audiences for the first time. 🎹

​In this interactive audio installation, a 1960s Mellotron keyboard is transformed into a storytelling device. Each of the 72 keys has been programmed to playback a different sound effect, vocal track, or musical part. A raven flies through the space; a lone rower navigates amongst the pillars in the flooded Church; a boat overflowing with people is hit by a storm off the coast; Sweelinck composes in the organist’s loft; a wave of bombers passes overhead; the police search a small apartment, a Ferris wheel floats past on a barge. ​The sounds and narratives play​ in surround sound over 23 speakers encircling the listener/performer in a dystopian story of their own making.

In a recent issue of The New Yorker, Hilton Als wrote about Hujar:Contact, on view at the Morgan Museum & Library through October 25, 2026. Als looks at how Hujar’s complicated life shaped his work, connections illuminated by the more than 100 contact sheets in the show.

“Art remembers long after we have forgotten,” Als writes. “Hujar’s work is so rooted in transience and in the slippery nature of identity—the quick shutter click between being and not being—that mounting a show of his contact sheets makes great aesthetic and political sense: Who are we, moment by moment?”

Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sophie Calle, and Eadweard Muybridge are among the many artists featured in Animal Model: 200 Years of Photography, on view through October 4, 2026 at La Mécanique générale as part of Les Rencontres d'Arles in France.

Featuring photographs ranging from the 19th-century to the present, from anonymous creators to well-known contemporary artists, the exhibition showcases our sensitivity to living beings, highlighting the overwhelming presence of animals in the collective imagination. Together, the photographs invite us to “rethink the boundaries between human and animal, gaze and image, as well as reality and its representation,” curator Nathalie Herschdorfer writes.
