Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present 'the passenger', an exhibition of recent paintings by the Northern California artist Liam Everett. This show marks Everett’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will be on view from September 10 through October 29, 2026.⁠

The gallery will host a discussion with Liam Everett, moderated by Mari Robles, Chief Executive Officer of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts followed by an opening reception.⁠

Berggruen Gallery is pleased to announce 'Defining the Century: Modern Visionaries from Picasso to Calder', an intimate glimpse of the oeuvres of some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.⁠

From innovative spatial experimentations executed by Alexander Calder, to Wassily Kandinsky’s pioneering notions of color and composition, and Pablo Picasso’s groundbreaking portraiture, this exhibition tells the story of visionary artists who broke from tradition, revolutionizing modernist art.⁠

The gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5 – 7 PM.⁠

Across the street from Berggruen Gallery at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), one of our wonderful artists Jacob Hashimoto will open the largest installation of his career with a public celebration on August 20, 2026. ⁠
⁠
'Jacob Hashimoto: Giant Arc' mixes nearly 75,000 hand-built kites made of bamboo and Japanese paper suspended together into a cloud canopy. Visible through two-story windows facing Howard Street, 'Giant Arc' will engage museum visitors and passersby alike. ⁠
⁠⁠
The site-specific exhibition will cover the museum’s ground floor admission-free Roberts Family Gallery from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. In addition to incorporating elements seen in previous works, Hashimoto will utilize tens of thousands of new elements built specifically for this installation some of which incorporate patterns and designs inspired by the flora and fauna of Northern California. Complementing hundreds of existing patterns, these new motifs include subtle graphic references to the dahlia, San Francisco’s official flower, the checker lily, a plant native to the Bay Area and the Sonoran blue butterfly, which is found along California’s coast.⁠

Visitors who experience the immersive, multifaceted installation are also welcome to visit Berggruen Gallery across the street to view several of Hashimoto's prints that are on view as part of the 'Summer Highlights' exhibition through August 27, 2026.⁠

'Summer Highlights' opens tonight, 5 — 7 PM⁠.⁠

⁠'Summer Highlights' features a curated selection of historical and contemporary works engaged with the conceptual and physical representations of summer. ⁠
⁠
Ghostly coastal scenes, saturated interiors laden with symbolism, and mercurial landscapes play off each other to produce an exhibition that explores the multidimensional layers of a moment in time. The works in 'Summer Highlights' probe the tension between the immediate and fleeting. Rooted in a celebration of the season, this exhibition explores the symbolic and metaphorical associations of summer.⁠

'A Tiny Radiance in a Dark Place' will be on view from May 7 – June 25, 2026⁠

While Waterston has long probed the tensions between representational and abstract forms within the genre of landscape painting, this exhibition represents deeper delving into abstraction. In each painting, the viewer encounters a profound sense of movement. Floating fields of color act as ethereal expanses, enveloping subtle figuration drawn from nature, such as trees and mountains. Sweeps of color and light ripple like sonic waves. As Waterston allowed music to inform his paintings, subtle shifts emerged in the rhythm of gesture, the envisioned colors corresponding to notes, the forms that arose, and even in his application of paint.⁠
