'A Tiny Radiance in a Dark Place' will be on view from May 7 – June 25, 2026

While Waterston has long probed the tensions between representational and abstract forms within the genre of landscape painting, this exhibition represents deeper delving into abstraction. In each painting, the viewer encounters a profound sense of movement. Floating fields of color act as ethereal expanses, enveloping subtle figuration drawn from nature, such as trees and mountains. Sweeps of color and light ripple like sonic waves. As Waterston allowed music to inform his paintings, subtle shifts emerged in the rhythm of gesture, the envisioned colors corresponding to notes, the forms that arose, and even in his application of paint.

Artwork details: All artworks by Darren Waterston, 2026, oil on wood panel; [1] 'Hymn to St. Cecilia', 72 x 60 inches; [2] 'Channels and Winds no. 2', 36 x 36 inches; [3] 'After Joy', 20 x 18 inches

Featuring oils on canvas and linen from her exhibition at Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco, in summer 2025, alongside other works made between 1994 and 2025, the book showcases a world where time is suspended, and people, objects and places flicker with restless vivacity. The book forms part of the Hurtwood Artist & Gallery Series.

With an insightful foreword by Berggruen Gallery’s Mary Kate Tankard, a detailed, extended essay by writer Craig Burnett, and a lively interview by Jeff Gunderson of the San Francisco Art Institute Legacy Foundation & Archive, the book illuminates Berggruen’s practice within a selection of forty-five of her most significant paintings.

Berggruen Gallery is proud to present 'Far Side of Town', an exhibition of new paintings by Michael Gregory. This marks his sixteenth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Nature Observed will be on view from May 7 – June 25, 2026
Opening Reception for the Artist Thursday, May 7, 5 – 7 PM

Taking its title from Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Hollis Brown,” a song recounting the hardship of a South Dakota farmer, Gregory’s paintings engage the metaphors of the American West alongside the hopes, dreams, and labor bound to the land. His signature barns and silos emerge within rolling plains and expansive skies. Horizon lines undulate, hills rise and recede, and veils of fog and diffuse light surface through a restrained yet luminous palette. The scenes are at once intimate and familiar, yet temporally indeterminate, producing a quiet dislocation of place and history.

Artwork details: All artworks by Michael Gregory, 2026, oil on canvas on panel; [1] 'Morning Dew', 60 x 50 inches; [2] 'Lamb White Days', 60 x 52 inches; [3] 'High Horizon', 60 x 52 inches

Tomorrow night, Rachel Simon Marino’s () inaugural solo exhibition at Berggruen Gallery opens to the public.

Opening Reception for the Artist: March 12, 2026, 5 — 7 PM
Exhibition dates: March 12 — April 30, 2026

Rachel Simon Marino’s visual worlds exist, as she describes them, “when a character has run off the cliff but before they’ve fallen.” Her illusionistic paintings depict fantastical scenes of suspended action at the turning point of disaster or drama. Teeming with Day-Glo color and graphically patterned landscapes and interiors, Marino’s bold playful chromaticism arrests the viewer with assertive joy.

Ladders break into two, fences split, bricks fall to the earth. Doorways lead to doorways which lead to windows. Figures depicted with tailored trousers, loafers, and heels emerge either in pursuit or at the moment of defeat. Through a dramatic play of light and shadow, along with symbols tucked into each corner, Marino creates cinematic spaces where everything is frenetically alive and slightly afoot—a masterful teetering between the real and the unreal.
