In her newest exhibition, Marta Penter turns her attention to mannequins, using their immaculate surfaces and idealized human forms as a point of departure for a more complex investigation of perception. Seen through storefront windows, the mannequins become surfaces upon which multiple realities converge: trees settle across plastic skin, architecture passes through bodies, and figures, light, and reflections dissolve into one another. What initially appears to be the subject gradually becomes a vessel for the surrounding world, blurring distinctions between figure and landscape, interior and exterior, the observed and the observer.
Across these new paintings and photographs, Penter draws attention to the visual complexity already present within a single moment. Her layered compositions ask us to reconsider the instinct to separate what we see into orderly categories and, instead, to experience several realities simultaneously. In this newest body of work, Penter continues an enduring concern within her practice: not simply representing contemporary life, but drawing our attention to the layers, connections, and unexpected beauty we may have stopped noticing.
