"Spotlight: The Printmakers VI" features the varied work of six, primarily California artists: Shari Arai DeBoer, Beth Fein, Sushma Kothari, Erin Malone, Clare Metague, Eiko Nishida.

This is the sixth exhibition of printmakers in our Spotlight Gallery in the Arc Gallery. It is a slowly rotating exhibition in which we showcase additional artists about every six months.

For the "Artist Reception and Trunk Sale", the gallery will have both framed works displayed in the Spotlight Gallery and unframed works displayed by the artists. This is a great opportunity to own affordable, original art.

Roadmap Curators’ Statement

A roadmap is a plan that guides progress to a goal. The journey towards that object can be as important as the result. As artists, we need to create plans, whether detailed or amorphous, but we also must be open to the unexpected and surprising directions that the process can take us.

For this show, the participating artists explored the theme of the roadmap in surprisingly creative and personal ways. This included individual geographies, diasporic passages, generational legacies, life states, or journeys of enjoyment or enlightenment. At its core, the art questions how we navigate identity, time, memory and space, both physically and metaphorically.

48 Pillars was inspired by a chance encounter at Flax with a close-out sale of deep vertical panels, 48” x 12” x 1 5/8”. Twenty-four local Bay Area artists each produce two companion pieces or diptychs on these identically sized panels. The panels exactly ring the gallery - 48 works total. It is essentially a “structural constraint” show. The artists are unconstrained in subject matter, except to the extent that works need to be a series, but they are constrained in format.....

Suzanne Jackson: “What Is Love”
at SFMOMA

“For more than six decades, Suzanne Jackson has led an expansive artistic life grounded in the belief that all of humanity, the natural world, and the cosmos are connected. Jackson, who defines herself first and foremost as a painter, has followed many paths, focusing at different moments on poetry, dance, arts advocacy, and costume and set design. Each evolution in her environment and artistic pursuits has brought a deeper resonance of Black and Indigenous ancestral wisdom, histories of migration, and explorations of structure and light.

This retrospective celebrates the full breadth of Jackson's artistic vision, situating her innovative pursuit to expand the parameters of painting within the social, political, and environmental contexts that have guided her. The exhibition begins with her early lyrical paintings inspired by dreams and mysticism, built from layers of washy pigment. It culminates with recent awe-inspiring compositions that suspend paint in midair and reflect on personal histories and legacies of cultural and spiritual resistance. These luminous works are, for Jackson, the most significant statements of her career.

Jackson believes that her creative life is indebted to the bohemian spirit and artistic legacy of the Bay Area. She spent her early childhood in San Francisco, where her parents moved in 1944, a few months after she was born. She later returned to study at San Francisco State University, where she was immersed in the counterculture movements of the 1960s. This is also where she self-published her first book, What / Love: Painting, Poetry, and a Drawing, in 1972.

Jackson's life has been guided by love and occupied by understanding how it manifests in nature, in our relationships, and ultimately in ourselves.

Here it culminates not in a declaration of what she loves, but in a call for each of us to reflect on what love is. The galleries that follow embody this ethos, inviting us to find our own answers in the wondrous beauty and resplendent energy that defines Jackson's life and work.”
