On August 21st we celebrated the opening of "Return to Nature," our current exhibit. The exhibit features stunning glass art from 13 artists based around the country, and the opening included a fascinating demo from featured artist Edd Johannemann.

Thanks to everyone who came to check it out and support these artists!

The exhibit is open at The Art Center NOW - Oct. 24th 😊

Dear Art Community,

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of our long-time friend and former employee Steven Stoll.

Steven was a big talent with a kind heart who lifted up those who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

A week ago we had the joy of opening the "ColLaboratory" Maker Space in the Sinnock Gallery, as part of the current exhibit, Return to Nature.

It was so fun to welcome kids of all ages into The Art Center to explore properties of glass like opacity, color, and transparency through hands-on activities and make-and-take art projects.

Huge THANK YOU to Quincy Children’s Museum for partnering with us on this special experience!

🔥 Technique Tuesday: Blown Glass

How does molten glass become a delicate vessel or a sculptural work of art? Through the ancient technique of blown glass.

Artists gather molten glass onto the end of a hollow steel blowpipe, then carefully inflate and shape it using breath, heat, gravity, and hand tools. The glass is repeatedly reheated, refined, and shaped before slowly cooling in an annealing kiln.

The result? One-of-a-kind forms shaped by the movement of molten glass and the artist’s skill.

You can view blown glass works by Brent Cole, Jamie Adams, Nate Steinbrink (pictured), and Mario Clarke in "Return to Nature," on display through October 24 at The Art Center.

✨Did you know there are six common ways artists work glass?

Though all glass artwork begins with a simple combination of silica sand, soda ash, and limestone, after heating to an extreme 2,000+ degrees, artists then use techniques like flameworking, hot sculpting, stained glass, cast glass, blown glass, and coldworking to create vastly different works of art out of the same initial material.

GREAT NEWS!

We are thrilled to announce an upcoming partnership with Quincy Children’s Museum, bringing the art and science of glass to life in Quincy Art Center's Sinnock Gallery this fall!

From August 21 - Oct. 24, families and kids can explore stunning artworks made of glass in the big gallery, then venture over to the "ColLaboratory" where there will be STEAM-based learning stations from Quincy Children’s Museum with hands-on make-and-take art activities from Quincy Art Center.

Visitors are encouraged to explore ideas related to glass, art, science, and nature through interactive experiences that encourage curiosity and creativity - we look forward to seeing you there!

🔷 Technique Tuesday

The Rose Windows of Notre Dame...the soaring stained glass walls of Sainte-Chapelle...Have you ever wondered how stained glass comes together?

While every artist has their own approach, the basic process follows a few key steps:

• Create a pattern.
• Select colored sheets of glass.
• Score and carefully break each piece to fit the pattern.
• Wrap each edge with copper foil.
• Solder the pieces together.
• Finish with a dark patina and polish.

Stained glass is a beautiful blend of creativity, craftsmanship, and precision. Every finished piece is made one carefully cut section at a time.
