It was a long time coming, but we got wonderful new lights installed this past week in the upstairs gallery. They look very professional and Brian Swann was able to select fixtures that fit the holes that were created when the ceiling was installed. If you haven't visited us, be sure to drop by any Saturday beginning in April from 1 - 4. We also make reservations to show the house. We'll open up for any size group. Call 217-223-1800 (Arts Quincy) and they'll get you connected with someone who will make arrangements with you! Always best to give us a few days notice!

In 1892, Frederick Douglass wrote in his autobiography, “True, as a means of destroying slavery, it (the Underground Railroad) was like an attempt to bail out the ocean with a teaspoon, but the thought that there was one less slave, and one more freeman – having myself been a slave, and a fugitive slave—brought to my heart unspeakable joy.” Come share the joy! Visit the Quincy Underground Railroad Museum website and schedule your visit today!

Join us Sunday February 23rd, from 1-4 p.m., as we celebrate our guest of honor and speaker, Mr. Leslie Eugene "Les" Fonza. Les is a giant in the Quincy music scene. Les taught thousands of aspiring young musicians here and is a regular performer about town. Be sure to arrive at 1 p.m. to hear Les speak about his life in Quincy and his fascinating career as a student, performer and teacher. With luck, he'll share the story of his courtship of Connie, his wife of more than a half-century. Hopefully we can persuade him to play his saxaphone. Also on hand will be the lovely Mett Morris who will entertain us with stories and songs.
Visitors can take their time to learn the history of the local Underground Railroad movement by viewing our excellent video. You may also peruse our galleries with story boards exploring the efforts of brave mean and women who helped enslaved people make their way to freedom.
A new addition this year will be the recently refurbished room that allows visitors to view the sidewalk from the Eells era. You can see the pathway Dr. Eells walked with Charley on that fateful night in 1842 that led to his arrest and prosecution. The Eells House is a nationally recognized, documented, Underground Railroad site.
This event is free and all ages are welcome. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Be sure to put this on your calendar!
