"It seems also that at the end, when the tumult of the crowd's shouting would not die down, I spoke a few words. I read the clipping now and cannot believe that I could have uttered another sound after I had finished singing. "I am overwhelmed," I said. "I just can't talk. I can't tell you what you have done for me today. I thank you from the bottom of my heart again and again." ~ Marian Anderson

"Marian Anderson's recital was given in the Mozarteum in the summer of 1935. Many invitations were sent out for her recital, among them one to Arturo Toscanini. Enough prominent people were there for the news of Marian Anderson's artistry to spread around; soon her name was on everybody's lips. She had quietly gained the attention and the confidence of the influential musicians."~ Kosti Vehanen Marian Andersons Pianist

'Someone has said that if Miss Anderson were to sing the telephone book from the beginning to the end it would be touching and filled with deep, tragic feeling. Her voice seldom moves one to gaiety or joyousness. It can be likened, rather, to wide open eyes filled with tears. It is also a voice of amazing range. At that first rehearsal she sang high C and low D, a span of three octaves, three times. It was real singing, without effort." ~ Kosti Vehanen Marian Andersons Pianist

β€œPart of the beauty of Marian Andersonβ€˜s voice is the reflection of an artistic conscience which knows no compromise with the truth. … Every part of her art is part of the art of song. All the vivid humanity of her singing she accomplishes by singing alone. She is every inch a singer, and one is tempted to say that she is all a singer ought to be.”

The National Marian Anderson Museum & Historical Society would like to wish everyone a safe, reflective and Happy Memorial Holiday Weekend.

(*Official photograph presented by the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society")

As we celebrate the Memorial Day holiday this weekend, we remember our great Marian Anderson and the dedication that she had to supporting our United States Military and Men and Women in service to this country.

" Among the audiences that I remember with special vividness are those I sang for during World War II in hospitals and in military establishments. In some locations I sang where there was no piano. I have deep pride and appreciation for the work that I have done supporting our country's Armed Forces and their families." ~ Marian Anderson .

It is our hope and prayer that as your honor and remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for our country that you also remember our great Marian Anderson and her home, the national historical landmark site Marian Anderson Museum that needs your help and support.

Its possessor was Marian Anderson, a young colored contralto, who was the only singer chosen from about 300 contestants in the auditions held last June. She appeared as soloist last night before what was estimated as the third largest Stadium audience of the summer." ~ Review of Miss Anderson s appearance with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Lewisohn Stadium, New York City, by Francis D.
