July is . Disability Pride is about accepting and honoring each person's uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity. Over a century before the ADA was signed (in 1990), Dr. Mütter was working to help and humanize his disabled patients, and highlight their maladies to help the medical community and the public understand the nature of disabilities. The Mütter Museum and College of Physicians has strayed from the mission of Dr. Mütter and his inclusive ideals.

Two prominent, living donors are now asking for their remains back as a direct result of the current leadership's actions and policies. The leadership of the Mütter Museum is actively harming the institution and needs to be stopped. Anna Dhody was the last pillar of integrity in the senior leadership. The Board MUST take responsibility and face the facts that the current leadership has been disastrous for the Museum and the College.

This comes as the relatively new leadership grapples with how to approach their collection, which includes a lot of human remains.

They're finally looking to hire a new President/CEO nearly a year after the last one d̶i̶t̶c̶h̶e̶d̶ f̶l̶e̶d̶ r̶e̶s̶i̶g̶n̶e̶d̶ i̶n̶ d̶i̶s̶g̶r̶a̶c̶e̶ left! Whoever fills this role will be have "considerable opportunity to shape the College's future". We can only hope someone reasonable is hired who respects the history, mission, and membership of the institution.

A year ago we launched our petition, which has since garnered tens of thousands of signatures from all over the world. Huge progress has been made. We are bubbling over with pride at what has been accomplished by a scrappy group of neurodivergent qu**rs. Tommy D would be so proud. Fun fact, the man loved hot pink silk. Happy Pride, loves!!!

Happy Mother's Day! Today we want to highlight one mother in particular, Mary Ashberry. From what we know, Mary was a woman in the 1800s with achondroplasia (aka dwarfism). Because of her short stature and the limits of medicine at the time, her baby did not survive birth. Shortly afterwards, Mary also died from the ordeal of giving birth. Unfortunately, the current administration has chosen to continue displaying Mary's remains and the remains of her infant like this. With her infant's skull on the floor. Heartless and disrespectful. As though Mary didn't endure enough as a Victorian s*x worker with dwarfism who lost her child.

This mother's day, remember Mary Ashberry. Remember all the people with dwarfism who experience higher levels of infertility, infant mortality, and barriers to accessible maternal and reproductive care. Remember Mary's baby, whose short life should be better honored than a spot of floor. Would it be so hard to use a pillow, a column, something? If the leadership had a shred of decency they would right this wrong.

Anna Dhody is no longer the curator at the Mütter. The news is buried in the latest member email and nowhere on social media but we think people should know. Anna devoted nearly 20 years to the Mütter and those who love it. Her exit is a huge loss for us all. We do not know what her future holds but we hope it is bright. This is yet another crushing blow to the institution. We wish Anna all the best in whatever she does next.

We have unfortunately received several reports that the "[email protected]" email address actually goes straight to Kate Quinn's inbox. Yet again, a complete lack of transparency and accountability from this draconian administration. We therefore recommend emailing interim CEO [email protected] as well as contacting local media with your concerns. We're working on a prompt for folks who aren't sure what to say (or don't trust themselves to keep it PG (which we totally understand)).

There's a new op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer today that provides a scathing indictment of the Mütter's "Unhoused" exhibit. This is exactly what we've been encouraging people to do - reach out to the media, make your voice heard!!!

Did you know? The Board has tried to ruin the Mütter Museum before. In the 90s, the Board and leadership tried to steer the Mütter away from medical anomaly, from "death", and from "attracting too much attention". Lucky for us, they failed thanks to the incredible Gretchen Worden. Now here we are 30ish years later and they're at it again. Unfortunately, Gretchen is no longer with us. So it's up to us. Call, email, post, tag, share. The people who want to ruin the Museum have been defeated before, we can do it again. [Link to City Paper article from 1996 in comments]

You know why medical history is important? Because history repeats. Take the cholera epidemic of the early 1800s and it's *shocking* amount of similarities with the COVID-19 pandemic. Misinformation, confusion, panic, conspiracy theories, attacking the medical community, xenophobia - it was 200 years ago and it's still relevant. Medical history is the history of all humans, and it needs to be preserved and accessible. Not to mention, cholera is still a huge problem affecting millions worldwide.

What does this specifically have to do with the Mütter Museum? The invaluable bio-repository of the continues to "yield new insight" into this pervasive disease. The leadership wants to abandon this history in favor of a "contemporary museum of health and wellness". All medical history IS "contemporary". It's relevant and it's important, and we need to protect it.

DNA analysis of pieces of intestines from six people who died of cholera yielded new insight into how one strain of bacteria can overtake another, researchers reported in a new study.

We've been trying to think of the best way to describe our feelings about the Unhoused exhibit currently at the Mütter. Homelessness is a very real public health issue that has persisted throughout history. People experiencing homelessness are faced with insurmountable barriers to care, stigma, violence, localized epidemics, higher rates of mental illness and substance abuse issues not to mention disenfranchisement. The Mütter could have produced an exhibit that highlighted the very real current and historical issues facing the homeless globally and in our very own city. They could have explored the history of "charity hospitals", persistent infectious diseases, period poverty, and on and on. Not to mention, there could have been real input from the MANY local homelessness organizations like Project HOME or Broad Street Ministry or Philadelphia Department of Public Health even. Instead, the leadership chose to display an art project with minimal real scientific information. It's a huge missed opportunity and a real disservice to an incredibly vulnerable population.
