The Marian Anderson Historical Society

The Marian Anderson Historical Society www.marianandersonhistoricalsociety.weebly.com The organization was founded by the late Blanche
Burton-Lyles and has existed for the past 26 years.

The Marian Anderson Historical Society is an organization that has been dedicated to promoting the late classical singer, who was considered of the most important opera performers of the 20th century, showcasing her Residence as a Museum and supporting the development and performance of Young Classical and Performing Artist Scholars. The society itself consists of The Marian Anderson Residence Mus

eum at 762 S. Martin St., where Anderson lived for much of her life. Beyond that, the area around these sites has been named the Marian
Anderson Village, which proudly boasts flags around the neighborhood. In addition to the residence houses, the village contains Marian Anderson’s church, elementary school and a recreational center dedicated to her. The society is working on creating the Marian Anderson Educational Pavilion, which it says is “designed to educate and produce and audio/visual interactive
tour of the Marian Anderson Heritage Village.” Aside from merely promoting Anderson through displaying imagery from her life, the society seeks to spread Anderson’s music throughout the world. The scholars’ program frequently supports young classical and opera singers from around the world. These artists perform regularly at events that the society sponsors, and many have gone on to more prominent positions in places. As well as partnering with the Arts Empowerment Project to provide education, development and performance for all Children in the Arts in the Tri-State Area.

". I cannot get over the recurrent phenomenon of people who pay their way into my concerts and then go to the trouble of sending personal gifts, which mean a great deal to them and so much to me. A woman in Canada came to the hall, against her doctor's orders, I learned later, and brought a doll she had fashioned with her own hands". ~ Marian Anderson

While we are in the midst of Phase Two of the repair and restoration of our historical landmark and Marian Andersons home, the Marian Anderson Museum and Historical Society is so excited for the intense repair, restoration and return of another one of many of the gowns that was severely damaged from the flood that we suffered. This dynamic and elegantly beautiful gown was worn by our Marian Anderson and created circa 1942. The repair and restoration of these artifacts and gowns is being made possible by the gracious donor support of the DAR National organization.

The Marian Anderson Museum & Historical Society expresses the utmost and sincere gratitude to the National DAR and President Wright for their support and Donation to the Marian Anderson Museum. The Marian Anderson Museum Historical Society and our Board Leadership recognize the magnitude of this historic and significant donation that is being presented and we are most sincerely and humbly grateful to DAR President General Wright and the DAR membership for showing their reverence for Marian Anderson and their desire to see her historic home landmark museum and cultural institution be fully restored to reopen to the public for in person touring and programming once again for future generations to come. It is our hope that this restorative grant will encourage others to give and support to the completion of the restoration of the National Marian Anderson Museum and our great programming into the future for generations to come.

"One has to have the audience in mind, and one must never forget that an audience is many people, some who are deeply musical by nature and cultivation and others who have little musical background and wish only to be entertained. I seek to put together music that will appeal to both sorts of listeners. At the same time it must be music that I believe in. It must be good music; it must be music with which I feel at home; otherwise I cannot reach others with it." ~ Marian Anderson

"The next time I met Mrs. Anderson was in her little home in Philadelphia. When we were sitting at the dinner table, she asked the blessing in a soft voice, rather quickly, but it was evident that the old religious ceremony was kept alive by everyday use. She is also the guardian who sees that other customs of her old home are kept in force. For Thanksgiving day there was a traditional Turkey. " ~ Kosti Vehanen (Marian Andersons Pianist).
