We'd love for you to join us Friday, December 22nd from 11am to 9pm for the "Make Life Sweet" Exhibit: 1040 N. 2nd St, #301 on Liberty Walk! Or, join us that evening 6pm to 9pm for the dessert party opening!
The 'Make Life Sweet' community art exhibit at 1040 Creative Gallery in Northern Liberties is a celebration of both art and aging. This unique exhibit showcases the talents of older adult art students, who have come together to create faux desserts using Paper Mache and other materials that we normally discard. These delectable-looking treats serve as a visual metaphor of how seniors continue to embrace life and all its sweetness, despite the challenges that may come with advancing age.

The idea behind the exhibit is to highlight the creativity and resilience of older adults, who often face ageism and stereotypes that suggest they are no longer capable of enjoying life. Through their amazing art pieces, these seniors prove they are still capable of creating beauty and joy in the world. The 'Make Life Sweet' exhibit is a celebration of the older adults in our community and their ability to find joy and purpose in their golden years.

One of the most notable aspects of the exhibit is the 'Everybody's Birthday' wall, which features graphic art of seniors from four different Philadelphia area senior centers. This wall serves as a reminder that no matter our age, we all deserve to celebrate and be celebrated. It is a powerful representation of the diverse and vibrant community of older adults in the Philadelphia area.

In addition to the Paper Mache desserts and the graphic art, the 'Make Life Sweet' exhibit also introduces designer art toys created by 1040 Creative's older adults' art class instructor, Sheena Garcia. The prototype images of CocobeanZ art toy collectibles add another playful element to the exhibit, inviting visitors of all ages to explore their own childlike wonder, despite age.

Many of us have known this pioneering Gallerist, Curator, Designer and supporter of the Arts for years and are quite aware of the stellar work that Keith has contributed to Philadelphia's Art scene! In celebration of Juneteenth, Keith will be presenting works from his exquisite collection of African American Art at 1040 Creative! Mark your calendars for this extraordinary event! Curated by Keith Scriven, the 1040 Creative Juneteenth exhibit, "Constantly Amazed" Three Decades of Collecting is opening Friday, June 16th, 6-9pm! A bit more about Keith...
Gallery Owner and Leather Smith – Keith Scriven’s journey through the seas of Philadelphia’s art world has been uniquely his own. Scriven landed along the shores of a burgeoning Old City Philadelphia circa 1993 as a Master Jeweler who had studied his craft by day through Bailey, Banks & Biddle as the head of in-house jewelry design & production, and by night in an intensive apprenticeship with his mentor Oscar C. Robinson, the first Black jeweler on Philadelphia’s Jewelers Row.
He invested his savings into a property that would soon become Diznyers KMS Gallery in Old City. What made Scriven’s flagship boutique, so unique was that, while the glass displays on the floor were filled with exquisite pieces of fine jewelry the high white walls were adorned with eclectic original works of art from Philadelphia’s new arts scene including, always, space for the city's most promising young African American artists.
As Dizyners gallery went on to start a new age in Philly art and culture, it was Scriven’s footprint as a founding father of First Friday and Board Member of the Old City Arts Association that led to an explosion of young creatives moving into Old City, establishing it as ground zero for art and design. Scriven’s true legacy was the creation of a true community of artists and gallery/studio owners that would go on to be the backbone of an exploding arts, culture and real estate scene.
As the accolades started to arrive - Philly Entrepreneur of the year award from the Chamber of Commerce; Philadelphia City Paper’s Artist of the Year, Philadelphia's most influential under 40 Philadelphia Tribune - Keith began to field offers to represent the city itself and curated 100's of exhibits of local, regional, National & international artists...
