Asian Arts Initiative stands with the people of Gaza and calls for the liberation of Palestine. As quoted by James Baldwin and amplified by Shirien Damra (), the role of artists is to โ€œmake [people] conscious of the things [they] donโ€™t see.โ€ We stand with our artists who are speaking out against oppression, and amplify their voices in this moment. Find a list of resources on our website to support, which will be updated as we continue to fight alongside Palestine.

Join us at the screening of โ€œNo Rule is Our Ruleโ€ at Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival ()! This event will take place at the Black Box Theatre here at Asian Arts Initiative on November 4, 4-6PM.

โ€œNo Rule is Our Ruleโ€ is a story of a friendship between two independent female artists and the body memories each willingly carries. In January 2020, NYC-based interdisciplinary performance artist Eiko Otake () arrived in Beijing to visit Chinese choreographer and filmmaker Wen Hui. Eight years apart, Eiko was born in postwar Japan and Wen during the Cultural Revolution. They planned to visit each other to collaborate, but COVID-19 abruptly cut off Eikoโ€™s trip. The two continued their dialogue on Zoom, sharing past works to form a deeper understanding of their differences and similarities.

This screening will be followed by a conversation between Eiko Otake and Puerto Rican dancer, choreographer, video, and improv artist, Meriรกn Soto ()

CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH THE POWER OF ART

Connecting cultural expression and social change, Asian Arts Initiative uses art as a vehicle to explore the diverse experiences of all communities which include Asian Americans.

The organization grew out of a program started at the Painted Bride Art Center in 1993 in response to concerns about racial tension between African American and Asian American communities. Today, Asian Arts Initiative provides a wide array of programming to serve artists, youth, and our broader community of Asian/Americans. Through exhibitions, performances, and community projects, we provide an inclusive gathering place for conversation and exchange of ideas.

Located in Philadelphiaโ€™s Chinatown North, Asian Arts Initiative is a multidisciplinary arts center offering exhibitions, performances, artist residencies, youth workshops, and a community gathering space. Here, all of us can view and create art that reflects our lives, and think critically, creatively about the future we want to build for our communities.
