There are still several spaces available in our afterschool Teen Studio program! Teen Studio is available to any student who attends a public high school in Philadelphia, is free and takes place every Wednesday from 3:30-6 PM!

This residency is an opportunity for students of Philadelphia high schools to explore their ceramic style. Participants will have full access to studio materials including clay, glazes, oxides, machinery & more. We will explore a mix of hand-building techniques & wheel throwing. We will have a variety of artists from the clay studio teaching workshops related to their personal art style or cultural practice.

Ceramics provides opportunities for students to have a creative outlet that promotes focus and patience, and is also a known stress reliever. Students will build self confidence and a sense of accomplishment as they learn ceramics skills and produce both functional and decorative works.

As freeing and liberating as working with clay is, it also teaches the important lesson that our actions have consequences. Mistakes or missteps are part of the process, and problem solving skills are developed along the way.

Registration is first come first serve!

Masa Sasaki has some lovely (and sometimes spooky🛸) work in our shop right now!

Masayuki Sasaki, is a classically trained artist, with multi-facetted interests. He is an accomplished pianist, award-winning painter and uniquely stylistic potter. Since moving from his native Japan in the late 1980’s, he has impressed teachers, patrons, and his fellow artists with his unique sense of precision and artistic vision. “We live in the world where we are surrounded by machine made and mass-produced goods today. I feel, as a contemporary craftsman, the need to validate the value of handmade items by making things that could not be easily duplicated and unique to my own artistic perspective. For me it is not enough that a final piece be essentially functional and pleasant, it must also be lasting in its desirability for use. Long after I have ceased to be productive the pieces that I accomplish today should still be enjoyed, appreciated, and used. This is the elusive quality that brings value to functional art, the lasting character that transcends the artist and outlives him. Whether in my paintings, musical composition, sculpture or pottery I desire most of all that the usefulness and aesthetic appeal be both easily perceived, and lasting.”

A Force for Good

The Clay Studio inspires curiosity and discovery around the art and craft of clay, drawing together students, artists, and an engaged public into a welcoming community. Every day, in our classrooms, studios, galleries, and neighborhoods, we deepen the connection between people and clay with the highest quality programs and exhibitions. Founded in 1974, The Clay Studio continues in the belief that shared creativity, so fundamental to humanity, is a critical force for good.
