The Missing American Aircrews Project: Developing Archaeological Tools to Recover the Fallen
Sunday May 17, 2026 at 1pm

The Missing American Aircrews Project (MAAP) is a research initiative run out of UC Berkeley’s Bear Bones Lab. Under the supervision of Dr. Jun Sunseri, our students have developed a digital comparative database of American World War II aircraft components, life support equipment, and aviator uniforms. These images are deployed during downed aircraft excavations to identify materials that could lead to the positive identification of missing service members. The MAAP mission is to make these excavations more accurate and efficient in service of the loved ones waiting for their aviators to return home, while also engaging with the communities committed to preserving this material and knowledge.

The Oakland Aviation Museum has been instrumental in the development of this database; generously offering expertise, time, and access to diagnostic materials in their collections to help us build this database.

Join us on Sunday May 17, 2026 at 1pm to learn more about Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency partnerships, and how you may be able to contribute to the Missing American Aircrews Project in the future!
