Designed by Steve Bauer of Bradbury & Bradbury, the walls of the billiard room and the three upstairs bedrooms have been restored and covered in carefully researched patterns from mid-19th century European and eastern seaboard homes, authentic to the era.

The program will feature a presentation by Steve and Lisa Bauer, tours of the Home followed by our traditional champagne reception.

Pardee Salon Continues on February 22 from 2-4pm with the Gene Anderson, author of Legendary Locals of Oakland.

Gene is a fourth-generation Oakland resident. His great-grandparents lived in West Oakland where his great-grandfather worked for the South Pacific Company on a ferry boat.

Mr. Anderson’s interest in Oakland history took off in 2009 when he started a blog called “Our Oakland". He would ride his bike around town and take pictures of old signs he’d come across during his rides. Readers of the blog would comment with personal stories connecting them to those old and forgotten signs. Through those comments and stories that Gene realized how much of Oakland’s history was little known outside of small circles of residents.

We will have an opportunity to meet Gene and learn about mid-19th Century Oakland, historic events, and high profile neighbors when the Pardee family came to town.

Announcing a great celebration of California women winning the right to vote. Join the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) and Oakland’s Pardee Historic Home Museum in recognizing the 114th anniversary of the triumph of California suffragists winning passage of the pivotal Suffrage Amendment to California’s State Constitution in the 1911 election.

This community event will take place at Oakland’s Pardee Home Museum, 672 11th Street, on October 4th from 1:00 -to 4:00 pm.

The program will feature presentations, light refreshments and a rousing California Women’s Suffrage Campaign Readers’ Theater. Several local volunteers, representing individual suffragists, female and male, will briefly present the dramatic story of the challenges and campaigns women endured from their defeat in 1896 to their victory on October 10, 1911.

The Carriage House Salon Continues!: Kristin Caven presents "For the Love of Joaquin Miller"

Sunday, September 14th, 2025 from 4 PM to 6 PM

Oakland's own Victorian poet was a walking, talking symbol of the Golden West. We remember him for his frontier ethics and bad boy antics but don't fully understand his uplifting magnetism. Kristen Caven, the California Writers Club Writer in Residence at Joaquin Miller Park, will paint us a new picture of Joaquin Miller as America's late romantic by introducing us to the many fascinating women who loved him. From the legendary Paquita, his Indian bride, to the "White Witch of Oakland," his daughter Juanita, we'll meet poets, actresses, heiresses, and the nation's wealthiest female tycoon.

Pardee Home Museum Salon Continues withJewelry from the Gilded Age (1870-1914)

A lecture featuring Sacha Q Grippando will be held in the garden at the Pardee Home Museum, Sunday August 17, 4-6 PM at 672 11th Street Oakland. (Enter at garden gate on Castro).

William Shakespeare famously wrote "all that glitters is not gold." This statement could not better sum up the Gilded Age, a period that spanned 1870-1914 in America. This was a time of immense political, economic and social change and unrest. On the surface it was a time of glamour, innovation and immense wealth, the likes and scale of which had never been seen in the US. What better way to show one’s power than through the most dazzling jewelry ever made.

Innovations in metalsmithing and lapidary coupled with the discovery of diamonds in South Africa heralded an era of jewelry made with superior craftsmanship and brilliance. Although the Pardee family’s collections did not focus on jewelry, understanding the era is important in viewing each epoch of history that influenced lives at the time.

Sacha Q Grippando, G.G., AAA is a graduate gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America and a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America. Her lecture will focus on the history, characters and jewelry from this fascinating time-period. The styles of pieces shown on programs like "Downton Abbey" and "The Gilded Age" will be shown in a Powerpoint presentation.

After the talk, we will enjoy a champagne reception with a lovely assortment of sweets and savories.

The Pardee Carriage House Salon – Aleta George: The Pleasures and Perils of a Literary Pilgrimage

Aleta George is a journalist and independent scholar who writes about the nature, history, and culture of California. Her work has been published in Smithsonian, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, and High Country News. She is the award winning author of Ina Coolbrith: The Bittersweet Song of California’s First Poet Laureate. She will share her experiences of making pilgrimages to sites important to Ina Coolbrith, the subject of her first biography, and Jack London, the subject of her current project. The book tells how the young Coolbrith slipped into the male-dominated literary world of post-Gold Rush San Francisco where Bret Harte, Mark Twain, and John Muir got their start and how she mentored Jack London and Joaquin Miller. She will discuss the climate and world of some of these writers from the Bay Area at the turn of the 20th Century.

She is currently working on a new book about the long time valet to Jack London – Yoshimatsu Nakata. Nakata is a primary character in her book-in-progress, a place-based biography about London’s formative and lifelong relationship with the San Francisco Bay. Nakata kept journals in 1909 and a later one in 1914. Her hope is that Nakata’s 1914 diary will help tell the story of London’s last, four-month cruise on the San Francisco Bay less than two years before his death.

Yoshimatsu Nakata was Jack London’s right-hand-man for eight years, at the height of the novelist’s prolific career. At the turn of the last century London was one of the most widely read writers in the world. In 1897, already a committed socialist, London dropped out of the University of California after one semester to seek his fortune in the Klondike. He didn’t find gold but did return with vivid impressions that he turned into stories that became bestsellers, including such adventure classics as The Call of the Wild and White Fang.

Change is all around us and Azucena Rasilla is there to chronicle it. Azucena Rasilla is a bilingual journalist from East Oakland who has reported on the rich cultural heritage and artistic landscape that surrounds us, juxtapositioned to the constant stream of depressing news and crime statistics. Her work has appeared in the SF Chronicle, KQED, Eater, Curbed and the East Bay Express where she started her career. She is currently the arts & community reporter for the Oaklandside (https://oaklandside.org/author/azucena-rasilla/). Serving as the host of Culture Makers (https://oaklandside.org/culture-makers/), a live quarterly event focusing on creative people and artists in Oakland, provides Azucena (and you should you attend) the platform to reflect on how reporting, entertainment and food service has changed since the pandemic. Her recent piece on movie theaters encapsulates some of these changes. So many people learned the comfort and ease of being entertained at home by a cornucopia of media as opposed to times past when generally there was a theater in every neighborhood. These provided a safe and easy place for local people to meet, greet and share entertainment as a community.

Azucena will share amazing places to eat, hear music and about all the things that make Oakland exceptional (especially the renowned Pardee Home Museum). A champagne reception will follow the lecture with sweets and savories and a nod to the wearing of the green!

The Zingeray ensemble of the Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco, now in its 97th year, will perform an afternoon program of songs with selections in Yiddish, Ladino, Russian, and Hebrew. Singing and participation will be encouraged for everyone. The Chorus has been spreading Yiddish music and culture since the 1920’s and is delighted to entertain with songs reflecting the tapestry of Jewish life — joy, struggle, justice, and peace.

In existence since 1926, the Jewish Folk Chorus stays true to its roots in the labor movement by preserving and performing works from its library of Yiddish labor songs. Through its 97-year existence, the Chorus has sung many interesting and difficult Jewish musical works, without forgetting the simple folk music of their ancestors. They preserve a rich, diverse, and deeply satisfying musical heritage.

An event of international intrigue!

We will host John Cha an Oakland resident and author who has written several volumes of biographies about Korean and American leaders. He is also an award-winning translator of Korean literature into English. “Ever since I came to America at age fifteen, I spent most of my life telling people about Korea, her pains and triumphs. I am constantly amazed and pleased that there are so many more stories out there waiting to be told, waiting to be heard.” But, most of all he is a passionate Board member of Mulmangcho Foundation in South Korea, providing learning opportunities to young people who have fled the North.

Two women who escaped North Korea have been in the U.S. studying English for the past 6 weeks. Eunji is a student at Korea National University of Arts, majoring in classic guitar. She is a marvelous musician and will honor us with a performance. Sukyung (Grace) is an English major at Sogang University in Seoul. She wants to be a translator but is also a musician. Their goal is to show that music and education transcend borders by fostering unity and freedom. Both have incredible stories to tell. For all of us who have questions and concerns about North Korea this an opportunity to get an insightful perspective.

Kathleen Cha is Regional President of the League of Women Voters. She is an author, documentarian, playwright, and wife of John Cha will be here to introduce the program.

After the performance there will be a question and answer period followed by a champagne reception. This will be a wonderful opportunity to spend a Sunday afternoon in a lovely garden.

Pardee Home Museum recognizes and thanks Pacific Gas & Electric Company for its generous sponsorship of California ReLeaf’s Growing Green Communities Grant Program which made our Arbor Day Old Oakland and Jack London Square Tree Planting Project possible. We also thank and recognize CAL FIRE and the USDA Forest Service who continue to support urban and community tree planting efforts all over California through funding, education, and other resources. Thanks to Trees for Oakland as a project partner along with support from Downtown Oakland and Jack London Square Business Improvement Districts, Old Oakland Neighbors and especially to all 50 volunteers to participated and helped to plant 21 trees today and green the streets of Oakland.
