EXCITING NEWS! 📣

We are excited to announce that our Fall 2020 Capstone exhibition will be premiering next Monday, December 7! 🙌

The Fall 2020 Capstone Exhibition, Asier & Exitus is an exploration of the world at large told through stories centered around seemingly mundane objects. Asier & Exitus challenges viewers to reconsider their place in the world and their relationships with everything in it. By reimagining the world through the lenses of different objects and speculating on the hypothetical futures those objects mag summon, this exhibition attempts to cultivate a new appreciation for the things we often take for granted in the present.

For this premiere, we will be holding a YouTube livestream on 12/3 at 1:30PM EST. We hope that you will be able to attend! 💛💜

You can find more information about Asier & Exitus by following them on IG at @asierandexitus.

Archiving HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?: Process Over Product

Thrilled to announce our Fall 2020 Exhibition featuring the YAMS Collective's Archiving HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?: Process Over Product!
———————————————
Archiving HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?: Process Over Product initiates a web-based digital archive of works by the collective HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? (also known as the YAMS Collective). By emphasizing “process over product,” Archiving HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? delves into the ongoing evolution of artworks in their collective making. The exhibition—which is being produced and conceived in a real-time collaboration with the New Media Artspace Student Docent Team and will evolve as the semester progresses—shows how both artworks and the archives they comprise are always negotiated in a constant flux of incompletion and reinvention.

With 45 collaborators located around the world, HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? makes work rife with emergent, cumulative process. This exhibition focuses on a single project, Immortal Uterus (2007–ongoing), a woven VHS tape installation by YAMS Collective member Jasmine Murrell. Indeed, the form of weaving itself evokes the braided and intertwined relationships that trace along all YAMS collaborations. Archiving HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? documents how Immortal Uterus has evolved over the past decade, mapping its networks of collaborators and contributors, and throwing diverse media practices (past and present) into relief through a framework of Black medicine.

Yam is root, Yams roots, roots earth’s veins, pumping lifeblood. Ground food is Yams, Yemanja’s yams, thighs of the mother, mother of oceans, keeper of tides, healing from the rages of war. The polarity of this dimension, holding space, holding time for birth, for death. The path to the eternal....

Dark Vision
by Irene Zhang

Dark Vision is a suspenseful short film in which the artist, Irene Zhang, recreates nightmares she had in the past. As a young child, Zhang watched numerous horror movies. As an adult, this has caused her to have nightmares, losing sleep and often waking up trembling. Zhang wants to bring awareness of the psychological impact of watching horror movies for children when the films may not be age appropriate.
Dark Vision was recorded on iPhones, giving it a natural feel. The video has several twists and suspenseful moments intended to let viewers inside Zhang’s dreams.

Labels
by Aliza Naqvi

As an American Muslim, Aliza Naqvi focuses on how an individual can be perceived differently in a society just because of mere accessories. In her animation work, Labels, she layers accessories and hairstyles on and off the face of a constant individual to reflect different stereotypes. Through this visual experience, Naqvi addresses a topic of constant concern and discussion in today’s society, which is how other people perceive and label individuals into a specific category just because of their appearance.

Postponed Dance
by Lorenz Lina

In his video, Postponed Dance, Lorenz Lina concentrates on relearning his dancing skills. After reviewing his old work, Lina reawakens his passion for dancing. The video documents the challenging process of relearning this skill, culminating in a performance. The audience can witness the differences between his youthful performances and his current state as a performer.

Exposure Diagnosis
by Enoch Sup Lee

Enoch Sup Lee’s Exposure Diagnosis is a critical examination of internships, freelance contracts, and the like that do not favor or benefit artists. The ethics of the business world is in a downward spiral, forcing artists to work for little to no compensation in the hopes that mere ‘exposure’ will benefit them later in their careers. Exposure Diagnosis showcases the struggle of aspiring artists when it comes to getting fairly compensated for their works.

That’s How I See Me
by Roksolana Kotskovych

That’s How I See Me is a film that about unsupportive friends, “those who only drill holes under your boat to get it leaking and discredit your ambitions and pretend to love you.” Roksolana Kotskovych explores this issue through the lens of humor, by employing the melodramatic acting of silent film.
