Susan Eley Fine Art Conceived as a salon-style gallery, SEFA NYC is situated in an Upper West Side townhouse in Manhattan.

Susan Eley Fine Art (SEFA) was founded in 2006 by Susan Eisner Eley, who continues her tenure as owner and director at the gallery’s original location in NYC—as well as its new venue in downtown Hudson in Upstate New York. The space offers intimate viewing experiences, differentiating itself from more formal presentations characteristic of the “white cube” gallery model, ubiquitous within dominant contemporary art circles. SEFA hosts a dynamic roster of American and international artists, and focuses on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists, who work in a range of media—encompassing painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography. Solo and group exhibitions at both NY venues showcase abstract and figurative work, created by a diverse body of artists from the US, Latin America, Asia and Europe. In addition to its regular exhibition programming, SEFA has hosted artist talks, political fundraisers, literary and poetry salons and panel discussions on a variety of cultural and political topics—as well as participated in art fairs in Miami, Houston, San Francisco, New York City and Toronto. A supplement to recent virtual exhibitions, SEFA Hudson was established in Summer 2020, initially as a “pandemic pop-up.” Within the past year, this new satellite space has become a principal gallery within the Hudson Valley art scene—integral in welcoming and expanding both local Upstate art communities and visitors to this burgeoning arts region. The success of this space represents owner Susan Eley’s commitment to adapt to these unprecedented and ever-changing global conditions while continuing to share art with broad audiences. SEFA is a small business that is female-owned and operated, and that supports feminist and BIPOC artists and principles.

TALK TODAY at 2PM at Greenville County Museum of Art Greenville Co. Museum of Art

Artist Liz Rundorff Smith has an exhibition of paintings at the Greenville County Museum of Art entitled “Nothing’s Ever Really Wasted.” Her collaborations with textile designer Teresa Roche—The Alchemy Collection—will also be on view during the 40th Annual Antiques, Fine Art & Design Weekend in Greenville, South Carolina. There will be an artist talk at the museum on Sunday, October 18th at 2PM.

In this Artist Focus presentation, SEFA debuts a series of work on paper by Liz Rundorff Smith entitled “Good Bones.” The artist renders sketchy outlines that hint at architectural structures, including doors, windows and stairs. These “bones” float through colorful, abstract backgrounds. The lyrically applied hues surround or contain, interrupt or envelope, obscure or enliven the aforementioned ghostly forms—their intention dependent upon the viewer’s nuanced interpretations.

Rundorff Smith uses acrylic paint and graphite to create these expressive works, a rare series on Yupo paper. The artist meditates on the constant weight of caretaking, specifically motherhood, and seeks to memorialize its invisible invisible force, its silent labor. The moniker “Good Bones” references a recent period when the artist was recovering from knee surgery and the fragility she felt now needing care. This role shift is reflected in the ever-changing relationships with her two daughters as they all grow older. In this new presentation, Rundorff Smith confronts vulnerable, emotional experiences.

Liz Rundorff Smith currently lives and works in South Carolina. She exhibits regularly at Art & Light Gallery and Susan Eley Fine Art. Her paintings are currently exhibited at the Greenville Museum of Art in South Carolina during the Antiques, Fine Art & Design Weekend — happening now! OPEN STUDIO! This weekend SEFA artist Susan Lisbin will participate in the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum’s Member Studio Tours WAAM Her studio is located in the Foreland building at 111 Water Street, Floor 2, studio 19 Foreland

Lisbin is recognized for her ceramic sculptures that hint at the human, often female, form. She also activates her abstract paintings by juxtaposing line and color. They morph into dynamic, shifting compositions suggesting an ever-present potential for movement.

Fall into autumn with these beautiful, otherworldly photographs by Carolyn Monastra. 🍁🪾🍂 Here are two images from her “lovely, dark and deep” series, as well as the artist with gallery owner Susan Eley at SEFA Hudson.

For the past two decades, Carolyn Monastra’s work has focused on creating and discovering mystery in the natural world. She uses photography, video, sound, public art and community-engagement to address environmental issues and examine humans’ relationship with our ecosystems. Through her various photographic series she has researched documenting the climate crisis and species extinction. In the series “lovely, dark and deep,” she aims to depict the woods and forests in a mythical manner, capturing their beauty and secrets. These fragmented, long twilight exposures capture mystifying and attractive versions of the woods.

While it is raining in New York, SEFA continues to appreciate the flowers! Gallery artist Angela A'Court is known for her beautiful botanicals and calming interiors. Using soft pastels, A'Court creates delightful scenes in works such as "This Morning," "Jordaan" and "Finding Space II" which are featured here. The artist is from London and currently lives in New York.

A'Court states: "My evolution has been influenced by living in and experiencing different cultures, which have offered up a visual and emotional dimension to the work. As an onlooker, I have observed in each the routines and customs that provide a structure for day to day interactions and our need for connection. I am interested in re-defining soft pastel as a modern medium for reflecting contemporary life by distilling and exalting its intrinsic immediacy and tactile distinctiveness."

Enjoy the warm weather with some beautiful paintings by Rachelle Krieger. Her landscapes and flowers are primarily created with acrylic, spray paint and flashe on linen. In the series "These In-Between Days," Krieger renders dynamic abstractions of the natural world 'en plein air.' With sensuous applications of pigments, she layers bold hues and constructs rhizomatic forms—then interrupted by intuitive streaks of technicolor spray paint. 🌺🎨
