"And yet Kander makes no secret of the fact that until 30 (and beyond), he was still questioning himself—seeking his own voice and vision of the world. His method? “I photographed an enormous amount. I would go out on the weekends and photograph landscapes again and again. That’s the only way to get good at it. I still have filing cabinets filled with negatives.”

A relentless drive combined with a thoughtfully cultivated humanness—according to the sought-after photographer Nadav Kander, that is what it takes to make your mark in our age of visual glut

"As of December 4, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 61 journalists and media workers were among the more than 16,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with more than 15,500 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel. The deadliest day of the war for journalist deaths was its first day, October 7, with six journalists killed; the second-deadliest day occurred on November 18, with five killed."

Editor’s note: The list below is CPJ’s most complete account of journalist deaths in the war. Our database will not reflect many of these casualties until we have fully investigated the circumstances surrounding them. For more information, read our FAQ. UPCOMING BOOK TALK—Join legendary photographer Eugene Richards () as he discusses his latest , “In This Brief Life” at the Bronx Documentary Center on Saturday, December 16, at 2PM. The book features more than 50 years of mostly unseen photographs—from his earliest pictures of sharecropper life in the Arkansas Delta to the present.

In the midst of a fraught political climate—pandemic, rise in gun violence, polarized politics, and unending wars—Richards found himself meditating on what it means to make socially conscious photography today, and revisiting his archive led to him to publish this latest volume.

Books will be available to purchase following the event via Venmo, Paypal, or cash.

"It’s important to ask why there exists the eagerness to publish this particular group of photographs. Is “book form” the intended culmination of the work itself, as opposed to being a sequence of images exhibited on a wall? Is the eagerness really a desire to see your name on the front cover? Or would you be just as happy to do it anonymously, as long as you were able to tell this story to the world?"

The renowned publisher offers his advice to street photographers hoping to publish their first photobook—and reveals the questions that all photographers should ask themselves before they seek to publish a book

ANNOUNCEMENT: From now until 8 December we will be donating 20% from direct sales of our current titles (see exclusions below) from www.gostbooks.com to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières to support their ongoing and vital work.

As an independent business we appreciate your support by buying books from us directly. Rather than participating in Black Friday or seasonal offers—which aren't sustainable to us due to our high production costs which we do not want to compromise— we would rather try to help raise funds for a good cause at a time when customers may be gift buying.

We will donate 20% from all current titles, excluding 'From the Heads of the Hollers', 'Thatcher's Children' and 'Odesa' as we already have donations in place for these titles. The donation also won't be applied to pre-orders of forthcoming books nor special editions.

The GOST Books team would like to thank everyone for their support this year!

Many of the books were in the collection of Tim Hetherington, an Oscar nominee and World Press Photo award winner, who helped plan the BDC before his tragic death in Libya in 2011. Other books were donated by companies such as Aperture, Mack and Radius, as well as by photographers Stan Banos, Eugene Richards, Joe Rodriguez and many others. The library was constructed over the span of a year by the BDC’s staff and volunteers.

These are the photographs that capture the year
