At the BDC, weâre talking about community transformation from within. When young people are given opportunities, theyâre not just changing their own livesâtheyâre paving the way for others. At the BDC, photography becomes a tool and a metaphor, allowing students to capture their world, from their own perspective, and share it with a larger audience. Theyâre not passive observers, but active storytellers, bringing their streets into focusâthe vibrant history, the experiences of neglect, and the untapped potential. In communities like the South Bronx, itâs the youth who can reshape the narrative.
This is the power of the Bronx Documentary Center.

In a worn-down neighborhood of a worn-down borough of a grand old city, sits a grand, old, worn-down building. That building, on the corner of Courtlandt Avenue and 151st Street in the South Bronx, has served many people. It was built in 1871 as a German saloon. In the â40s, it was an Italian sandwich shop. Through the â70s, as vast expanses of the South Bronx burnt, it survived. For decades it just housed pigeons, until the â90s when each floor sheltered a different vice: drugs on the first, guns on the second, a brothel on the third.
Today it houses the Bronx Documentary Center, serving mostly middle and high school kids in the poorest congressional district in the nation. It teaches them how to be photographers and how to be journalists. It equips them with tangible skills, technical expertise, and support to dream beyond their circumstances.
