250 years ago in Kingsbridge this week…

- Before reading, can you guess the location of the house in the photo? Answer is below.

Thousands of British troops had come to New York and were about to fight George Washington’s army on Long Island.

Washington ordered Major General William Heath to take command of a division of troops based in Kingsbridge to defend the strategically important bridges in this neighborhood. The Kingsbridge Historical Society is thrilled to share that we have been awarded a 2026 Preservation Supplies Grant as well as a Site Assessment grant through the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Grant Program.

This statewide program—administered by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts—supports museums and collecting institutions across New York with Conservation Treatment Grants, Preservation Supplies Grants, and Site Assessment Grants.

This year, 134 applications were submitted from institutions across 46 counties, requesting more than $91,000 in support. We are honored to be among the 129 organizations recommended for funding,. Applicants represented an extraordinary range of operating budgets—from $3,100 to over $20 million—showcasing the diversity and dedication of New York’s cultural community.

These two grants will directly support the KHS ongoing work to preserve and protect the KHS artifacts collection . We are deeply grateful to GHHN and NYS Council on the Arts.

Meet Robert Brown. Look for his banner as you walk along the shopping areas in Kingsbridge. Robert was a local, African-American soldier and patriot in the Kingsbridge (south Westchester) militia in 1775. He grew up near current day Horace Mann School and was an enslaved individual, later freed as a young man. Robert was one of very few African American soldiers in the Westchester militia.
