There is something uniquely revealing about experiencing art in a private home – seeing how works live alongside the everyday and become part of the rhythms and stories of a life. Trine and Gunnar Kjems’ thoughtful collection reflects many years of curiosity, deep engagement, and a genuine passion for the arts. Thank you for opening your doors to AFSMK🙏🏻🇩🇰🇺🇸

For the fifth year, CHART returns to Tivoli, bringing contemporary art and culture into one of Copenhagen’s most iconic and atmospheric settings.
AFSMK arranged a private tour — perfectly timed between small rain showers, the sun came out as we wandered through Tivoli. A beautiful meeting of art, architecture, culture and a little Copenhagen magic.

CHART is widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary art fairs in the Nordic region — a meeting place for some of the most influential galleries, artists, collectors, curators and art enthusiasts from across the Nordics and beyond.

Founded in Copenhagen in 2013, CHART brings together established galleries alongside younger, emerging programmes, presenting a curated snapshot of the diversity and vitality of contemporary art in the region. Beyond the fair at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, CHART extends throughout the city with talks, performances, music and public art — including the wonderful CHART in Tivoli exhibition.

A heartfelt thank you to all AFSMK patrons for being part of today’s preview and for your continued support of AFSMK. It was wonderful to experience CHART together with you. And THANK you director Julie Quottrup Silbermann for welcoming us!

AFSMK LEGACY CAMPAIGN
For more than a decade, AFSMK has brought together a remarkable community committed to strengthening cultural connections between Denmark and the United States through art, friendship, and shared experiences.

As we celebrate AFSMK's final year, we are launching a special Legacy Initiative that reflects the values and vision that have guided the organization since its founding. Centered around the upcoming William H. Johnson exhibition at SMK and in the US, this initiative honors AFSMK's longstanding commitment to transatlantic cultural exchange and invites our community to help carry that spirit forward.

William H. Johnson's story—bridging America, Denmark, and the wider Nordic region—embodies the very connections AFSMK has worked to foster for more than a decade. By participating, supporters become part of a lasting tribute to the relationships, cultural dialogue, and international friendships that AFSMK has helped create.

We hope you will join us in celebrating this legacy and helping ensure that the story of International cultural exchange continues to inspire future generations.

SMK AND AFSMK ANNOUNCE THE CONCLUSION OF A REMARKABLE TRANSATLANTIC PARTNERSHIP

Statens Museum for Kunst/The National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) and the American Friends of SMK (AFSMK) has announced that AFSMK will conclude its activities and formally dissolve on 31 December 2026, bringing to a close more than a decade of successful collaboration dedicated to advancing Danish art, culture, and international engagement in the United States.

In response to evolving governance and compliance requirements for SMK, both organizations have agreed that AFSMK will conclude its mission at the end of 2026, marking the completion of a highly successful chapter in their collaboration.

Over the past decade, AFSMK have supported the conservation of more than 30 artworks, 18 acquisitions, strengthened research and exhibitions, activated and built an extraordinary transatlantic community around Danish art and culture.

This decision is not a reflection of diminished ambition, but rather the completion of a highly successful chapter.

We are deeply grateful to all the board members, staff, patrons, donors, partners, volunteers, and friends who have contributed to this remarkable journey.

AFSMK will remain fully active throughout 2026, continuing its programs and celebrating more than a decade of cultural exchange, philanthropy, and friendship between Denmark and the United States.

Thank you for being part of our story.

The newly opened ‘As Seen Below – The Dome’ at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is more than an artwork—it is an invitation to see differently. Created by American artist James Turrell, it is the largest Skyspace ever built in a museum setting and the artist's most ambitious work of this kind to date. Visitors enter a vast underground dome where light, colour, architecture, and the open sky merge into a single experience. The artwork frames the sky itself as the subject, reminding us that perception is not passive; seeing is an act of creation.

"The architecture brings the sky close, so you recognise that the act of looking is itself the work," Turrell says—a fitting description of both this remarkable Skyspace and the enduring power of art.

To step into an artist’s studio is to enter a space where imagination still lingers in the air. At Næblerød’s studio, forms shift, materials come alive, and creativity seems to pulse from every corner.
A wonderful and inspiring final AFSMK event before summer—offering a rare glimpse into one of Denmark’s distinctive contemporary artistic practices. Thanks Frederik and Carla for your warm hospitality!❤️

At Slot, history meets contemporary vision. Its rooms are filled with world-class international art installations, transforming the castle into a living dialogue between past and present.
A highlight of the visit was the tour led by its owner, Duddi, whose personal stories, passion, and unique perspective brought both the art and the castle vividly to life.
An inspiring experience where heritage, creativity, and human connection came together in a truly memorable way.
