Catherine Opie invites us into her Los Angeles studio to discuss ‘Walls, Windows and Blood’, her series of photographs examining the power systems that exist within Christianity and the Vatican.

The series was created in the summer of 2021 during Opie’s residency at the American Academy in Rome. Due to pandemic restrictions, the Vatican was uncharacteristically empty, allowing the artist to photograph Vatican City and the Vatican Museum with an extraordinary amount of freedom.

➡️ Opie’s solo show ‘Walls, Windows and Blood’ is now on view at our New York gallery through March 9. Join us for a celebratory reception with the artist on Thursday, February 15, 6–8 PM.

🗣️ Announcing Our Milan Pop-Up! 🇮🇹

Our seasonal space in Milan will open on April 12, featuring a group exhibition of new and recent works by Hernan Bas, Mandy El-Sayegh, Todd Gray, Alex Prager, and Nari Ward. Led by gallery partner Jessica Kreps, our Milan pop-up will be housed at Circolo Art, a non-profit organization spearheaded by Nicole Saikalis Bay.

This space marks our first physical location in Italy and follows the success of recent pop-ups in Aspen, Palm Beach, Taipei, and Beijing.

Our Milan pop-up aligns with a season of notable gallery activity throughout Italy, including the 60th Venice Biennale ‘Foreigners Everywhere’—which will feature Kim Yun Shin—and Nari Ward’s retrospective exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan. The pop-up also coincides with beloved local art and design fairs Miart and Salone del Mobile.

Curated by Dexter Wimberly, the show features works by Leonardo Benzant, McArthur Binion, Alteronce Gumby, Nicholas Hlobo, and Brittney Leeanne Williams.

Dominic Chambers’ solo exhibition ‘Leave Room for the Wind’ is now on view at our New York gallery through Saturday, February 3.

Showcasing new paintings and works on paper, the exhibition continues Chambers’ examination of the contemporary role of leisure—focusing on its relationship to nature—and explores how art can function as a mode for understanding, recontextualizing, or renegotiating one’s relationship to the world.

‘Leave Room for the Wind’ coincides with the artist’s debut solo museum exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (on view through February 15) and marks Chambers’ first major solo exhibition in New York.

+ On Wednesday, January 31, Chambers will join Jenée-Daria Strand, Assistant Curator at Public Art Fund, for an artist talk at the gallery. Starting at 5:30 PM, the event is free and open to the public with prior registration.

Welcoming Kim Yun Shin to the Gallery!

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce our co-representation of pioneering artist Kim Yun Shin with Kukje Gallery. In February 2024, we will present a dedicated selection of works by Kim Yun Shin at Frieze Los Angeles, followed by an ‘In Focus’ presentation at our New York gallery in March. Additional forthcoming exhibitions include the artist’s first solo exhibition at a Korean gallery, opening at Kukje Gallery in March 2024. This comes on the heels of the artist’s recent solo exhibition at the Nam-Seoul Museum of Art in 2023.

Kim, who is currently based between Buenos Aires and Seoul, is regarded as one of the first women to formally train as a sculptor in Korea and remains actively involved in her artistic practice today. Over the last six decades, Kim has expanded her practice to include painting and printmaking, enabling her to explore her sculptural ideas in a two-dimensional format.
