Genesee Valley Council on the Arts

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, home of the New Deal Gallery and supporter of the arts through out the Livingston County area.
Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA) offers the community the space in which to share, learn, and see art. The mission of the arts council is to enrich the quality of life in Livingston and Monroe Counties by encouraging and promoting the arts and cultural activities. Situated on the Livingston County Campus in Mount Morris, a former tuberculosis hospital complex, our building's original use was as a four-apartment dwelling for the hospital's physicians and their families. GVCA now provides a permanent home for the county's large collection of WPA paintings created through a depression-era program and allocated to the hospital in the 1930s. These hang in the New Deal Gallery on a rotating basis. This gallery is one of the attractions on the Greatest Generation Trail. A second gallery, Apartment One, features work by juried, regional artists. Good Deals Gift Shop complements the collection in the New Deal Gallery. Depression-era reproductions and resources are available, as well as a variety of items created by local artists and food artisans.

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts has been Livingston county's official arts council for 50 years and we are excited for the next 50. We are a community arts center with a multitude of activities including 3 galleries (free of charge to visit), a historic 1930s art collection, yoga and art classes, a gift shop filled with locally made artisanal items and open studios for anyone in the community to use for a low rate! Please join us at GVCA and get creative!

Mission: Genesee Valley Council on the Arts is Livingston County's official arts council. Our mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Livingston and Monroe County area by encouraging and promoting the arts and cultural activities.

Hey you, Monroe County! We’ve been hearing a lot of questions about who we are and what does GVCA do? (And especially, “what’s an arts council in Livingston County have to do with ME?”) So, let us save you the trip south of the city and meet you in the Public Market... From 4-6pm GVCA will be at The Yards (50-53 Public Market Way) with an assortment of treats including: a sample from our New Deal Collection, a performance by Brighton Symphony Orchestra’s Rococo project (one of our grantees!), raffle items from our neck of the woods, snacks and a whole lot of information on how and why you want to get involved! .

From our friends at Owl Light News, who are looking for submissions to “Flights of Fancy” —

“Owl Vision encourages community members who are not regular Owl Light News contributors to submit creative writing, 2-D art and hybrid creations for consideration. The chosen pieces will be published in our July “Flights of Fancy” edition of Owl Light News (in print and online). One featured writer/artist will receive $75 and a one-year mailed subscription to Owl Light News (a $100 value); all other selected writers/artists will receive a one-year mailed Owl Light News subscription.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2019 – midnight.

We are looking for creative interpretations of the theme that challenge accepted meanings and norms. Without “unrealistic” dreams where would we be? Without flight most certainly!

Those wishing to submit can find additional information at https://www.owllightnews.com/owl-vision-2019-flights-of-fancy/. Entries and questions about possible entries can be sent to [email protected] or fb @ Canadice Press. “

Call for art from Rochester Contemporary Art Center for NYS Art Workers to "Take Back the Walls"

"We invite current employees of museums, visual art spaces and galleries in New York State to submit their artwork for exhibition. Both 2D and 3D works of all mediums are accepted. This call excludes past employees and family members of the employee."

Read more on the attached page.

Interesting opportunity for what the gallery defines as "Art Workers" in NYS:

"RoCo invites employees of museums, visual art spaces and galleries to come into the light and take back the walls to which they have dedicated so much. Anyone who is employed by an arts organization in New York State is invited to submit work for display in Take Back the Walls. This exhibition is juried by Karlos Carcamo, a multidisciplinary artist and a framer at The Museum of Modern Art in NYC. There is a $10 registration fee per artist. Each artist may enter up to 6 submissions (artworks). RoCo will aim to exhibit a small body of work by each selected artist. Submissions will be accepted through Sunday, June 30 at 5pm." -Rochester Contemporary Art Center

**We need your input**

We are working with the GLOW YMCA to conduct a community needs assessment. To design services focused on the community, the Y would like to hear from the entire community.

https://yusa.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eywQkPSd0nGLF9H will take you to a short online survey. Based on this community needs assessment, the Y, in partnership with others, will begin to design and possibly deliver new programs and services that address critical issues in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in Livingston County.

Please feel free to share with other members of our community!

We would like to honor the winners of this year’s Staff Sergeant Alexandria Mae Gleason-Morrow Arts Scholarship: ⠀

Jayde Wilkin-Smith, Senior at Livonia High School, nominated by Art Teacher Kathy O'Neil⠀
and ⠀
Ken Hicks, Senior at Dansville High School, nominated by Art Teacher Kristen Pullen⠀

————————————————————⠀

The Staff Sergeant Alexandria Mae Gleason-Morrow Arts Scholarship is awarded to two Livingston County High School seniors with plans to continue their studies of the arts into their collegiate careers. This scholarship has always been a part of GVCA’s Scholastic Art Show, but was renamed in early 2017 in honor of the fallen airwoman who was active in her high school arts program and aspired to be a high school art teacher once she had completed her service. We are honored to administer this program and are pleased to announce that the scholarships are now for $350.00 each.
