This Day in History - Aug 25, 1932

Amelia Earhart becomes to first woman in history to make a non stop transcontinental flight across the United States in a Lockheed Vega 5B. The flight would take around 19 hours. Taking off from Los Angeles, California and landing in Newark, NJ, the flight would cover approximately 2,450 miles.

Amelia Earhart would become one of the early pioneers of women in aviation. Today, around 7.7% of rated pilots are women in the US.

The Cactus Air Force

On August 20th, 1942, the first American aircraft units landed to which include elements of the First Marine Aircraft Wing. They eventually would become known as the “Cactus Air Force” operating out of Henderson Field. Within twelve hours of their arrival, they began performing their first combat missions. After only 10 days of air combat, they had downed 56 Japanese aircraft.

On September 3rd 1942, Marine Corps General Geiger established the wing headquarters on the island and two days later, Marine Aircraft Group 25 began the arduous task of rolling back the Japanese forces by targeting Japanese resupply convoys on the high seas and dogfighting Japanese aircraft attempting to bomb American positions along with Henderson Field itself.

Conditions were poor and supplies and fuel was always critically low. Henderson Field along with the air units would endure unrelenting Japanese naval gunfire along with field artillery they dubbed as “Pistol Pete” along with rainy and muddy conditions that always made operations difficult. By the beginning of January 1943, enemy combat losses as a direct result from Cactus Air Force operations ranged as high as 900 aircraft shot down.

The Cactus Air Force’s defense of Henderson Field and American combat units in the fight island would become the defining moment in Marine Corps aviation.

NWM Awarded $20,000 Grant for AT-6 Harvard Restoration 🔧✈

GENESEO, N.Y. – The National Warplane Museum has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation to support the restoration of its North American AT-6 Harvard.

The grant will advance the aircraft toward a return to airworthy condition, supporting work on its engine, electrical system, landing gear, brakes, and other areas. The project will also preserve and interpret the Harvard’s own history as one of the most important advanced training aircraft of World War II.

The restoration also carries a significant local connection.

“The project extends beyond the aircraft's restoration,” says Austin Hancock, an active Museum volunteer with a background in museum curation who also works as a professional pilot.. “This particular aircraft will help us tell the story of Tuskegee Airman and Rochester native Leland H. Pennington, whose surviving flight records confirm that he trained in the AT-6 before flying P-51 Mustangs in combat with the 332nd Fighter Group.”

Hancock, who has spent nearly a decade researching Pennington’s story, is excited about the project.

"Restoring the National Warplane Museum’s Harvard will help tell the broader story of the pilots who trained in aircraft like this before entering combat. Our ultimate goal is to see this important advanced trainer flying again - preserving its history in the way it was meant to be experienced: in the air."

The Museum’s goal is to preserve the aircraft as a living piece of aviation history while creating new opportunities for educational outreach and public engagement.
