Giving the old girl a little press time this morning at the Warbirds over Monroe Air Show.
And W7 is headed that way soon!
B17 The Movie Memphis Belle as our first arrival.
MMB has left the Stuart Air Show and made her way up the coast to Monroe, NC where she will be joined by Whiskey 7 for the Warbirds Over Monroe Air Show this weekend.
On the way to Monroe in the MMB!
We tell people "You never know what will be next on a workday" for a reason! The high winds earlier this week took out our old wind sock. Wind socks are important because it allows pilots who plan to land which runway they should use. Here it the team rigging the new one yesterday.
If they have found the final resting place of the USS Johnston you can see from the debris how far gone the ship was when she finally went down. It is an amazing story (we linked one description a couple weeks ago). It is fitting that the RV Petrel does not publish the location she finds. These are war graves where many fought to the end with little hope of survival, but in fighting gave others the chance to live. They should remain undisturbed in respect.
The crew aboard Vulcan Inc.’s Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel has reached new depths, discovering the wreckage of yet another WWII ship. The ship was laid to re...
It was a beautiful day....
On the ramp at Stuart
A couple photos of the MMB on the ramp at Stuart. No show today but flying tomorrow.
Here is part 2 of the C-47 training video we posted a couple days ago. It was part of a series covering thousands of tasks. Given the severe shortage of trained technicians it was an important new tool for the services to use.....
Part two of a wartime training film on how to fly the C-47. Second of two parts of an excellent wartime training film on the legendary Douglas C-47. This fil...
We really take pride in committing to make every event we schedule. Our volunteers give their time, talent, and treasure to keep these old airplanes flying as a way to reach, teach and inspire people to celebrate and remember those who served before us. As the WW2 generation becomes history we believe it is critical to tell their stories to everyone but especially the young of our nation. Sometimes we don't make it to an event and Stuart is one where W7 will not attend. The weather yesterday (heavy rain all up and down the east coast) and today (high winds and icing conditions along the route) make the safe choice to stay on the ground. The MMB (in North Carolina) is still planning to attend and both airplanes are expecting to be at Monroe next weekend. We apologize to the crew at Stuart and all who hoped to see and ride on W7. Sincerely, The NWM Team.
Happy Halloween! Tomorrow is the first of November and the day the museum and office go to winter hours. Facebook is updated but we will be open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday's from 10-3 and by appointment. Work goes on all year long and we will keep you updated here, in the newsletter, and our web page.
In December 1941 the USAAF had just over 43,000 persons. In August 1945 (45 months later) just over 2,250,000 people in the ranks. The selection and training for a 50 fold increase was a herculean task and can be studied for years. One of they ways was the extensive use of films like this one to familiarize pilots with the operation of an aircraft prior to starting training as a way to jump start progress. Here is part 1 of just such a video. We will post part 2 also but you can find these and many others online.
First of two parts of an excellent wartime training film on the legendary Douglas C-47. This film has actor Arthur Kennedy in the role of instructor Captain ...
Well.. Mother Nature is giving us a challenge today.... We do not fly in (very) bad weather and that is what is being served up today on the East Coast (Happy Halloween wherever you are... it is going to be wet here!). The MMB and W7 will be heading to the event as soon as weather permits. Safety first and we expect to be there just not as soon as we wanted!
Thanks to everyone who came down to the Halloween party last weekend! You can see from the photos posted that it was nothing short of Spooktacular! Congratulations to all the constume contest winners. We raised over $2000 to go toward the engine replacement fund for W7. We had such a good time we are already thinking about next year! Thanks also to the team who worked to put the event together. They did a great job decorating the big hangar and with the food, drink and entertainment!
Yesterday was a great day in Western New York for the MMB to head south to the Stuart Florida Airshow but in the North Carolina area... not so much. The team spent the night at the Rutherford County Airport north of Charlotte and hope to press on today after the showers move out. The team at Rutherford was very welcoming and happy to have the unscheduled visit (we love how much people love this airplane!) Here are some photos from the trip yesterday and we look forward to heading further south....
During the training flight yesterday.....

You will be hearing about this man and how he saved his family and others as the war in Vietnam was ending. The airplane he stole is now at the Museum and will be put on display when she is ready.....
Dexter resident Phillip Pham recently told the story of how his father stole a military cargo plane to fly his family and 50 others out of Vietnam before the fall of Saigon to the communist government in 1975. Phillip, along with his father, 71-year-old Pham Quang Khiem, shared the story with Vietna...
National Warplane Museum - Geneseo Airshow's cover photo
Nice visit wrap up. Thanks!!
Visiting some family in Upstate NY, and got a chance to stop by the National Warplane Museum - Geneseo Airshow. At Geneseo they have the "Movie" Memphis Belle, but it's also special since the Bombardier of my grandfathers crew DeAlton "Buzz" Booth volunteered there. He helped work on the plane in previous years before his passing, and yesterday I was able to take a pic in the pilots seat. This would have been the same position on the plane that Grandpa Bill Hunnewell would have sat 75 years ago in the F & G series B-17 planes. Here's a pic of him in front of his name sake plane Weary Willie 42-102855.
I'm also sharing a pic of Buzz Booth (R) in Albuquerque, NM during the 99th Bomb Group Historical Society reunion in 1991. The other pic of him was taken a little over 75 years ago on the Isle of Capri rest camp, which was shortly after the waist gunner on the crew Gordon Beese was KIA. Hope everyone enjoys the pics, and is doing well!
Thanks, Will Hunnewell
She's alive! Whiskey 7 is back in action.
We are airborne and headed home!
Back home! Thanks to everyone who helped we're back home in Geneseo and happy to be here!
Getting ready to leave Ohio eta Geneseo around 1:30
Putting the final touches on the Whiskey 7 engine change. If all goes well she will be headed home soon.
Sunday morning at NEORA......
We cannot over state how helpful and friendly the group at this airport have been during our stay. They have reacted and anticiapted what we could use and always been positive and welcoming no matter how often we called with requests. We will be back and if you are flying around and need a place to stop you could do no better than Northeast Ohio Regional Airport https://flyhzy.com and Hampton Inn by Hilton Ashtabula: https://www.facebook.com/Hampton-Inn-by-Hilton-Ashtabula-336961886861427/
Checking out #2 engine before the first run. #1 is next....
