Hollywood Heritage Museum The Hollywood Heritage Museum is housed in the beautifully restored Lasky-DeMille Barn (c. 1901). It is the oldest extant studio in Hollywood.

The Barn was used as the production office for the first feature-length film made in Hollywood. The structure was the production facility of famed filmmakers Cecil B. DeMille (THE TEN COMMANDMENTS) and Jesse L. Lasky, who first leased the "barn" in December of 1913. The non-profit preservation organization Hollywood Heritage runs the museum and programs Evenings at the Barn with booksignings and l

ectures by historians and celebrity guests. We are open Saturday - Sunday from 11:00AM - 3:00PM. Call ahead during Hollywood Bowl season. The museum is sometimes closed due to Bowl events. Join us for a FIVE day book, memorabilia and media sale at the Hollywood Heritage Museum. A complete schedule is listed below. Pick up some new Hollywood history reading material, acquire a new movie poster for your home, dig through photo stills of your favorite actors and films, catch up on the latest movie star gossip in fan magazines circa 1952, take home a film festival on DVD, featuring hundreds of Old Hollywood titles!

There is no fee to attend the sale, or for parking. Popular prices!

The proceeds from this sale will go toward our re-roofing fund. With funds raised to date, we have purchased the shingles and can embark on phase one, but we are still fundraising for full installation and other maintenance projects for the 1901 Lasky-DeMille “Barn.” When you stock up on entertainment related books to further your knowledge of Hollywood history, you are helping to maintain Hollywood’s oldest, remaining studio building.

We are still accepting donations in all categories mentioned above. Pass on what you have enjoyed in your Hollywood history journey to a fellow enthusiast. Please contact us to arrange drop off.

We just got such a large donation, it had to be trucked in on a pallet! Peter Ford, son of Glenn Ford and Eleanor Powell sent us 700 pounds of pure Old Hollywood memorabilia delight, saved from his parents’ careers. Among these exciting additions to the sale are vintage magazines, lobby cards, press books and photos. Plus, we have celebrity owned items from the Motion Picture and Television Fund and an array of entertainment related books, DVDs and posters.

Our BIG book, poster, media (DVDs, CDs, etc.) and movie memorabilia starts this weekend! We just received a giant shipment that will be detailed in our next post, but first we want to get the dates and hours out there.

Join us for a TWO day book, memorabilia and media sale at the Hollywood Heritage Museum on Saturday, August 29 from 11am - 3pm and Sunday, August 30 from 9am - 2pm. Pick up some new reading material, get a new movie poster for your home, dig through photo stills of your favorite actors, browse all the news from Photoplay April 1954!

It's National Dog Day, so we're barking about the great dog actor Rin Tin Tin, an orphan from France who was found in a bombed out kennel during WWI. Rescued by U.S. Corporal Lee Duncan, Rin Tin Tin came home with the soldier after the War and became a movie star (after some training). He starred in 27 films starting with a role as a wolf in the 1922 film The Man from Hell's River. Legend has it, he was such a hit at the box office, he pulled Warner Bros. out of debt! Arf!!

Learn all about how Hollywood Heritage worked to restore and manage the Wattles Mansion, the last of the great "Wintering Estates" in Hollywood. You can watch this recorded program with Fran Offenhauser and Steve Sylvester for free on our Vimeo channel.

This video takes you back to Hollywood circa 1907 when California's agreeable climate developed a population of wealthy families who wintered in the state. The Wattles Estate is the last remaining intact of these wintering estates in Hollywood. Both the Gardens and the Mansion are intact and restored due only to 25 years of Hollywood Heritage scholarship, stewardship, and activism.

In the process of this major undertaking, we all gained a deep understanding of Gurdon Wattles’ attraction to our California sunshine and our varying landscapes—as the movie pioneers were similarly lured here. His Spanish themed pioneering house "Jualita" designed by architects Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey overlooked orchards and vast lawns. The estate continued up past formal gardens and into the canyons, tamed with his American and Japanese Gardens.

With eye-opening video footage you will see how Hollywood Heritage brought community life back to where the Wattles’ family had put down its roots. With 25 years of non-stop restoration and events, we rescued the Wattles Mansion and Estate from flood and mud, pulling back the curtain for a wider grasp of the significant origins of Hollywood.

Fortune seemed to smile on the Attie Building once more in 2020 when it was to be the cornerstone of a 280,000 square feet mixed use development, which promised to restore both the building and the rapidly fading mural. Unfortunately, the pandemic and subsequent retailing challenges in Hollywood has put these plans on hold and the project site has been sold. Today the Attie Building’s storefronts are shuttered and the YOU ARE A STAR mural is graffitied and deteriorating, causing alarm among its many admirers and visitors to Hollywood.

Recent media attention on the plight of the YOU ARE A STAR mural has further drawn attention to the Attie Building, highlighting how its vacant state has left important artistic and cultural heritage unprotected. It is Hollywood Heritage’s understanding that our community partner, the Hollywood Arts Council, which last restored the YOU ARE THE STAR mural in 2012, is working on this very troubling and sensitive issue. The Hollywood Arts Council has experience with difficult cases such as this. The restoration of a mural, no matter the condition, cannot simply be repainted, but requires the consent and participation of the original artist. The Council has a proven track record having successfully gained the support of Capitol Music Group and worked with the late muralist Richard Wyatt to recreate his 1987 mural, Hollywood Jazz 1945-1972, in ceramic tile on the side of Studio A at the Capitol Records Building. Hollywood Heritage supports the Hollywood Arts Council in its sensitive and important efforts towards the protection of the YOU ARE THE STAR mural and looks forward to its timely restoration. 🎶✨🎹What is silent film accompanist Michael Mortilla's plan to play for THE TRAIL OF '98? From romance between Dolores Del Rio and Ralph Forbes to character actors Karl Dane and Tully Marshall, Mortilla will give a full voice to each story.

THE TRAIL OF '98 will screen at Silents Under the Stars at the King Gillette Ranch on Sunday, August 23 at 7:30 PM. The event is free and you are encouraged to come early to picnic and tour the ranch.

Did we mention that the screenings is at the ranch where the film's director Clarence Brown once lived!
