Situated on historic Museum Row since 1965, the Craft & Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) is an invaluable contributor to Los Angeles culture, exhibiting current artists with intriguing perspectives and distinctive practices. Exploring the leading edge of craft, art, and design, CAFAM gives audience to diverse makers and artists whose work is often not represented in larger art institutions. CAFAM coordinat

es a robust roster of hands-on workshops led by professional artists and makers. Uncommon discoveries are also guaranteed at the CAFAM Shop, which offers an expertly curated array of handmade items from skilled artisans. The intimate, atypical museum space and independent spirit at CAFAM combine to create an atmosphere of excitement and innovation, where people in Los Angeles deepen their relationships to art, creativity and one another. Recently, we got looped in 🧶✨

Fiber artist Nancy Lee @‌handmadebynensh led an afternoon of finger knitting fun transforming chunky yarn into one-of-a-kind bags. From first-timers to seasoned makers, everyone left with something cozy, colorful, and completely their own 👜

Still not over these textures…

We’re putting out an open call for soil 🌱

From backyards to sidewalks, gardens to overlooked ground, soil carries memory, labor, and place. We invite you to contribute dry soil for our upcoming exhibition tierra.

A few notes for participants:

* Soil can be delivered anytime during the residency, not just within a limited drop-off window
* This is a national call–people from across the U.S. are welcome to send soil by mail
* Any kind of dry soil is welcome. Just make sure it’s bagged or in a container
* The soil does not need to come from locations connected to ICE spaces–contributions can come from any place you feel personally connected to
* Drop-offs at the museum: Wednesday–Sunday, 11 AM–5 PM

Address: Craft Contemporary, 5814 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90036

From tree to chair 🌳🪑

Over the course of two workshops, participants explored the journey of woodworking, with Part 2 wrapping up this past weekend.

We kicked things off by getting to know the material itself, exploring different types of wood, how they’re cut, and how grain direction shapes both strength and design. From there, participants got hands-on with the basics, learning to saw, drill, and safely use tools like the table saw as they transformed raw material into something functional.

Led by Julian Rich and inspired by Material Curiosity by Design, this workshop series introduced participants to the process from start to finish while building their own mid-century modern-inspired chair.

And yes, Buttercup the dog approves the final result. 🐶✨
