✨TIERRA PIECE FEATURE✨: Teresa Castro, 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘝𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘴

Teresa Castro is a Paipai artist from Baja California, who works with materials like clay and yucca fiber, perpetuating the art forms of her people.
The works she has displayed in the show are a selection of pit fired ceramic vessels, pair of sandals, and gathering bag.

The sandals and bags are very special because they are made from yucca and maguey fiber. These types of sandals are made across California and Mexico with variations in design and material dependent on the region. These ceramic vessels are made from clay that Teresa’s family gathers from their land that she turns it into workable clay. She uses a mold to start and then coil builds the rest of the vessel. They are then pit fired where they burn manure and burry the ceramics.

Come view these pieces 🏺 in our current exhibition 𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢, until October 25th!

This Saturday, our Maker-in-Residence, Jackie Amèzquita is leading an artist talk with senior curator Frida Cano on her process making from soil collected in places that hold care.

Following the artist talk, attendees are invited to contribute a hand-cast earthen form made with a mixture of soil, masa, and water, which Amézquita will use to complete her ongoing work at Craft Contemporary. This interactive experience will allow visitors to play an integral role in the creation of a "collective sculptural field---a shared body composed through many gestures, many materials and many geographies."
