Working in close collaboration with textile-makers in India’s Kutch region, Swapnaa Tamhane foregrounds the expertise and artistry of makers whose knowledge has long shaped global textile traditions.

Through installations inspired by domestic and working environments, Tamhane honors the ingenuity of textile communities while challenging colonial frameworks that have historically excluded these practices from dominant histories of art and design.

Come celebrate Whakatōhea textile traditions, contemporary Māori artists, and the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned Whakatōhea weaver whose knowledge continues to inspire generations at the Fowler on Saturday, October 10.

This special gathering brings an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) from the Fowler collection into conversation with contemporary Māori textile artists through storytelling, cultural presentations, and community connection.

It’s an afternoon honoring taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations—and the connections between whenua (land), ancestors, and community.

Before the Fowler opens to the public on Friday, October 2, join mindfulness educator Mitra Manesh for a special morning in the galleries from 11am–12pm. Through guided mindfulness practices, you’ll spend time with artworks in a quiet, contemplative setting—and maybe see them (and yourself) a little differently.

Mitra is a senior mindfulness educator at UCLA Mindful, painter, poet, and author of "The Attentionist," a philosophical fable about the power of paying attention.

Consider this your sign to put your phone down, take a beat, and spend an hour with art.

This program is presented in partnership with UCLA Mindful.

Join us on Saturday, October 10 for a special gathering for the opening of
"Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art"
from 2-4:30PM

This collaborative exhibition connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose raranga (weaving) skills were shared across Māori communities, this presentation celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations.

Through artists’ perspectives, cultural presentations, and opportunities for community engagement, the program invites visitors to discover the enduring significance of Indigenous knowledge, stewardship, and storytelling. The afternoon honors the resilience and creativity of Whakatōhea people who carry forward ancient practices while expressing contemporary experiences, identities, and connections to whenua (land), ancestors, and community.
