The mortar and pestle, like this one currently on view in "Mountain Spirits: Rice and Indigeneity in the Northern Luzon Highlands, Philippines," are essential tools for processing rice by the Ifugao people.

Used to thresh, de-husk, and pound the grains, they transform harvested rice into its edible form. Carved from hardwood, the mortar is paired with a long pestle. The sound of pounding rice is a familiar rhythm, echoing this crop’s central role in both daily life and ritual.

Happy National Dog Day! We love this work from our 2022 exhibition, "‘How Do You See This World?’: The Art of Almighty God."

For nearly thirty years, Almighty God has worked on an extensive series of paintings that constitute a campaign against smoking. The “I Will Stop Smoking” series grew to include humans, animals, and even plants smoking beneath texts that voiced a variation on the titular sentiment.

Meet the artist behind our latest Galleria installation, "Field Notes from Begumpura." Rahee Punyashloka (b. 1993, Bhubaneswar, India) is an artist, writer, researcher, and experimental filmmaker based out of Bhubaneswar and New Delhi, India.

Working across disciplines and mediums- including, drawings, installations, text, video, online interventions, and socially engaged publishing- he seeks to illuminate the vastly unrepresented/underrepresented artistic history of the anti-caste struggle and the Dalit identity. He has recently been awarded the Emerging Artist Award by the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Arts (F**A).

"Field Notes from Begumpura" imagines a future where Dalit and Adivasi communities live free from the violence and oppression of the caste system. Inspired by the 15th-century poem “Begumpura” (“The City with No Sorrows”) by Guru Ravidas—one of South Asia’s earliest visions of a utopian society—the project takes the form of speculative ethnographic field notes documenting this fictional casteless world. Last Saturday the Fowler hosted an exhibition walk-through of "Mountain Spirits: Rice and Indigeneity in the Northern Luzon Highlands, Philippines" for SoCal Filipinos' community members!

Co-curator Amy Landau led a wonderful tour of this immersive exhibition that explores how the Ifugao of northern Luzon have for centuries shaped their mountainous habitat through agriculture, ritual, and ancestral knowledge.
