Utagawa Hiroshige lived his entire life in the capital city of Edo (present-day Tokyo). This print shows the Ryōgoku Bridge, the largest bridge in Japan at the time of its completion in 1660.

At either end of the bridge were a host of tea and food stalls, theaters, storytellers, and street entertainers. The entire area teemed with activity as pedestrians and travelers traversed the bridge. In warm weather, firework displays over the bridge were much anticipated events.

Chase Hall (Chase Hall) explores a piece of our archives ↑

During his recent residency, Hall delved into The Blackburn Collection of Oceanic Photography—nearly 10,000 photographs and objects from 10 Pacific Island nations, spanning the 19th century to the present.

As an artist, surfer, and collector of vernacular photography and historical objects, Hall brought a unique perspective to the collection, exploring how images of daily life and surfing offer insight into histories of tourism, land ownership, and colonialism.

On October 18, Hall will share his thoughts and ideas during a walkthrough of our David Geffen Galleries, followed by a conversation with associate curator Dhyandra Lawson and LACMA CEO Michael Govan.

Opening in two weeks!

The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990 is the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to the impact of the Brockman Gallery, founded in South L.A. by brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis in the wake of the Watts Rebellion. Their space became vital for young artists of color, nurturing the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others. Featuring rich archival material and over 60 works of art across media—all with ties to the Davises’ community-oriented project—the exhibition traces how the Davises cultivated a space for artistic experimentation, intellectual exchange, and multicultural community.

From reimagining one of the world's leading art institutions to building a global gaming empire, Govan and Merrill bring distinct but complementary perspectives on how bold vision and risk-taking shape the future of creative industries. What can museums learn from game design, and what can games borrow from art? How can storytelling and technology converge to create new forms of cultural experience? Learn from leaders across two seemingly different worlds united by a shared pursuit of meaningful, lasting impact through creativity.
