The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles　国際交流基金ロサンゼルス日本文化センター The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles (JFLA) specializes in cultural exchange between Japan and the United States.

国際交流基金ロサンゼルス日本文化センターは日本と米国の文化交流機関です。

JFLA is a local office of The Japan Foundation, the cultural exchange institution, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, which promotes international awareness and mutual understanding between Japan and overseas countries. We also provide a wide range of programs relating to introducing Japanese Arts and Culture, promoting people-to-people exchange, supporting Japanese Studies and language education, and assisting media-related projects such as publications, translations, and film/video productions by offering various kinds of grants. Our activities are not-for-profit and we are financed by Japanese government endowment, annual government subsidies and funding/donations from the private sector. The Foundation maintains 22 offices in 21 overseas countries including 2 offices in the United States: New York and Los Angeles.

Mr. Kosei Murota, Consul General of Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, visited Arizona State University this week and presented a check for JFLA’s 2026-27 Salary Assistance Grant which was awarded earlier this year in support of ASU’s Japanese-language program.
Thank you to Consul General Murota as well as of International Letters and Cultures at ASU and its Japanese program for commemorating the grant. JFLA looks forward to seeing the continued expansion and success of the Japanese program at ASU!

Japan’s first emperor (Jimmu) is the grandson of a woman-god whose body is revealed to be a 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘪, an aquatic reptile similar to an alligator. Mountain landslides along streams are referred to as 𝘫𝘢-𝘯𝘶𝘬𝘦 (serpent breakouts). In medieval legends and folklore, women who are betrayed transform into terrifying snake-serpents.

In "Haunted Archipelago," Haruo Shirane examines the relationship among these different snakes and serpents through both the “natural” and the “supernatural,” key parts of what he calls the “eco-social imaginary” in Japan.

Japanese art historian and curator Meher McArthur dazzled a lively group with her lecture 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙅𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙨𝙪𝙜𝙞 𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 on October 7.

After discussing the development of kintsugi, its etymological variations, and its applications throughout Japan's history, McArthur used select objects to introduce unique approaches to the art of gold repair, including "double kintsugi" and "gem kintsugi." These same objects are currently on view in an exhibition curated by McArthur, sharing the 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙 title, for the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) until October 18.

Thank you to everyone who joined artist and author Miya Ando at the opening of her exhibition 𝘈𝘪: 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘰 at The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, on Wednesday, September 30.

It was a wonderful opportunity to hear Ando discuss her deep research into the many words that describe rain in Japanese poetry and literature. She also shared her thoughts on indigo (J: ai) as a material that has become ubiquitous to Japanese visual culture, its temporal qualities, and why it is perfect to convey the meteorological phenomenon of rain.

We were also so pleased to see everyone walk around with a copy of Ando's book 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘬𝘺 tucked under their arms. A huge thank you to our on-site vendor Chevalier's Books for making that possible.

Last Thursday, the Japan Foundation Los Angeles attended a reception hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles. This reception featured discussions about the current status of Japanese language immersion education while fostering increased networking and collaboration between institutions in the area.

Near the end of the reception, eleven institutions were presented with a letter of appreciation, which officially recognizes their contributions to Japanese language education.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the event and hope to see increased growth and prosperity for Japanese language education programs.
