BE ADVISED: Wednesday, June 17, La Brea Tar Pits will close at 2pm for an internal event. Additionally, Wilshire Blvd will be closed between Fairfax Ave and Curson Ave due to a nearby event on Saturday, June 20. Visitors can access the museum parking lot on Curson Ave via 6th St.

🦥 Not 𝘢𝘭𝘭 sloths hang around. Meet the Shasta ground sloth!

Compared to larger sloths, 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴was a smaller species with a tubular-shaped snout and fewer teeth. The structure of its teeth suggests that it was a browser, feeding on leaves of shrubs or low-hanging tree branches.

Shasta sloth fossils are typically found in now-desert regions of the American southwest, and may have been present in Los Angeles during drier periods of the late Ice Age.
