Who says nice girls finish first? Who says witches should behave? And who the hell decided women needed permission to take up space?

The Los Angeles Makery is summoning artists, rebels, rule-breakers, and beautiful troublemakers for The Art of Bitchcraft — an exhibition celebrating feminine rage, dark humor, unapologetic power, and the art of giving absolutely zero f***s.

Bring us your hexes, your heresies, your sharp tongues, your wild visions, and the work that makes people uncomfortable in all the right ways. We want the defiant, the provocative, the strange, the subversive, and the gloriously unhinged.

Sweet? Savage? Somewhere between a spell and a scandal? We want to see it.

Artist of the Month: Julie O’Sullivan

We are thrilled to announce Julie O’Sullivan as The Los Angeles Makery’s October Artist of the Month.

Julie is primarily an abstract painter, but her creative journey began long before she picked up a paintbrush. Growing up in a home with a stained glass studio and darkroom, she was surrounded by making, building, and experimentation. Her artistic education eventually expanded into painting, drawing, stained glass, photography, ceramics, and fashion design before leading her to a degree in architecture.

After years working in architecture and commercial construction, Julie found herself burned out by the constraints of codes, guidelines, deadlines, and design requirements. Abstract painting offered her something entirely different: freedom.

“I love the freedom of abstraction. I can breathe again and I am happy!”

Learning to paint without the rules she had spent years following was not easy. But over time, Julie learned to embrace uncertainty, spontaneity, and the freedom of making art without knowing exactly where it would lead.

“I had to learn to be free. At first, I was like a fish out of water. It took many years, but I have now learned to swim.”

Julie is an amazing painter and part of the artist community at The Los Angeles Makery in Little Tokyo, where you can find her working in her studio on weekends. We are so happy to have her as part of our creative community and excited to share her work with you throughout October.

🌻 Christine White works on a new sunflower painting, building layers and letting the image evolve with every brushstroke.

🎭 Aleka Corwin is deep in the ideation stage of a new photographic series exploring children wearing masks—imagining the story, the mood, and the possibilities before the camera even comes out.

Three artists. Three completely different processes. One shared reminder: art doesn’t begin with the finished piece. It begins with curiosity.
