The Los Angeles Makery presents Common Thread, a dynamic fiber art and mixed media exhibition bringing together the work of more than 24 artists across two floors of the Makery.

At the heart of Common Thread is the transformation of material—what is discarded, overlooked, or left behind becomes a starting point for artistic exploration. Many of the works incorporate discarded remnants and samples donated by interior design and architectural firms, giving new life to fabrics, textiles, surfaces, and materials that might otherwise have been destined for waste.

The exhibition explores the many ways artists work with fiber and unconventional materials to create connections between craft and contemporary art, sustainability and beauty, architecture and personal expression. From intricate textile works to experimental mixed-media pieces, Common Thread celebrates the tactile, the handmade, and the unexpected.

Spanning two floors of the Los Angeles Makery, the exhibition offers an immersive look at the diverse possibilities of fiber-based and material-driven art, bringing together more than two dozen artists with distinct approaches, stories, and techniques.

Caron G Rand Artist Talk & Performances by Ibuki Kuramochi and Darren Huang

Join us for an afternoon of art, movement, and music celebrating DARK/KARD, a solo exhibition by Caron G Rand, curated by Susan. The exhibition features Caron’s scroll and circular paintings in the Main Gallery and photographs of Ibuki Kuramochi in the Second Gallery.

Interdisciplinary artist Ibuki Kuramochi, born in Japan and now based in Los Angeles, will present a Butoh dance performance exploring the delicate relationship between pain and healing. Through meditative movement and subtle transformation, her work reflects on how the body holds memory, grief, and resilience—embracing pain as a path toward tenderness, compassion, and quiet renewal.

Composer and pianist Darren Huang, born in Toronto, raised in Beijing, and now living in Los Angeles, creates evocative compositions informed by his multicultural background. His music has been featured in award-winning and nominated films and documentaries. Darren will perform original piano works surrounded by Caron G Rand’s paintings, offering an immersive dialogue between sound and image. He is also the author of The Impermanent Light.

We invite you to experience an afternoon where painting, performance, and music converge in a celebration of transformation, beauty, and impermanence.
