A SHORT, FUN HISTORY OF THIS PLACE - 201 W5TH ST (courtesy George Siss III, Lorain Historical Society)

Built originally in 1902, this building became the site for the Dr. J.S. Mead Clinic, a medical clinic located at 111 Franklin Street. Then, nine years later, in 1911, when the Electric Building was constructed next door, the clinic occupied that part of the building as well for the next ten years. However, in 1921, the clinic closed its doors, leaving the original building that it had occupied first vacant. But, in 1921, the building at 203 West 5th Street was occupied by the Lorain Buick Co. - from 1921 to 1926. Then, from 1926 to 1933, it was occupied by the Lorain Times Herald Newspaper.

It wouldn't be until twelve years later, in 1933, that the space once occupied by the medical clinic would be taken up once again. From 1933 to 1942 it was the Masterson Beauty Shoppe. From 1942 to 1952 it was the Mar-Nel's Beauty Shop. Then, once again, for six years, from 1952 to 1958, it was vacant. In 1959 the Lorain Hardware took over the building using it for storage space until 1961. Then, in 1961, the Michael Angela Beauty Salon occupied the space, serving their customers until 1983. Then, from 1984 to 1991, it was L-O Paint Co. Aztec Developments then took over the building, operating from 1991 to 1994. After that, for the next four years, from 1994 to 1998, the building was vacant. It was then, in 1998, that the 5th Street Deli was built, where the building inside was totally remodeled. However, after some major setbacks, including experiencing a major fire in April, 2000, the deli-restaurant was forced to close in 2003.

Today, the building is the home of "Speak of the Devil"

What is happening behind the scenes at LHS:
Our valiant volunteer Andrea Schlageter has been working for months on inventorying the hundreds of tornado photographs and postcards that we have in our collection. For this project we needed someone who was detail oriented, had the patience of a saint, and who would enjoy “fun puzzles” such as reconciling our complex file database system with unidentified photographs. All so we can better share the collection with the community.

Thank you Andrea! Please help us continue these programs!! #GivingTuesdayNow http://ow.ly/zPBk50zAKbF

2020 Census | United States Census Bureau

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Census Bureau has identified Central Lorain as being one of two under-counted tracks in the city. What does this mean? For every citizen that goes uncounted, the City of Lorain does not receive federal funds for a period of ten (10) years. This has a direct impact on funding for education, social services, infrastructure, hospitals, public safety, and other vital programs. Please do your part and help protect our cities progams!! https://2020census.gov/en.html

There is an old school on the east side that is now the senior center. I was told it was call Jane Lindsay when it was a school. Anyone know who Jane Lindsay was and why she had a school named after her?
Perfect holiday gifts
This is a must-see Museum. Lorain Historical Society put together a great collection of a nautical, historical, and a beautiful gift shop. The building alone is worth the travel.

I had the privilege of addressing an audience of baseball fans here last night and had a great time. Thanks for the invitation and if my friends in the Lorain area haven't visited this place yet, they should. It's a beautiful building with a lot of information about the history of Lorain.
Many years ago a rubber stamp of the Lorain Lighthouse was created and sold. Do you know who I could contact to make more? Or who made the original one? Thanks in advance.
This is a photo of the Lorain City Council when my great grandfather Charles Snyder (in the center) was mayor. Can anyone provide me with additional details on Charles and his time in city government? Jane
Just saw your video of the lighthouse...very nicely done. have you guys ever thought of selling prints of the blueprints for the light?
