Mission: The Black River Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization. We were formed in 1981 to preserve the history of the City of Lorain. The Society collects artifacts on the history of Lorain, has numerous paper files on events and people in Lorain and has a collection of over 13,000 historical photographs, many of which are located in our Archival Photos section of the website. This volume of information provides many opportunities for research on industry, business, and the genealogy of people who have lived in Lorain.

We're looking for help from those of the “millennial generation”!
Join us for a brainstorming meeting at the Carnegie Center, 10:00 am on Sat, November 29th. We want to know how you might consider becoming involved in the work of the Historical Society as we prepare to enter into Phase 2 of the renovation of the old Carnegie Library Building (now called the Carnegie Center). This building has meeting room space, exhibit space and a reference room. We anticipate it being a center that will welcome Lorainites for years to come. We NEED your input! Please consider attending and bringing your friends! #ShareThis

Lorain native WELLINGTON OSGOOD, Brother of Virling Osgood, a prominent early Lorain Family, died on the Great Lakes Steamship the Erie Belle. He was an engineer on the ship. His body was brought back to Lorain. The Erie Belle was a Great Lakes steam ship which exploded in 1883 along the shores of Lake Huron. Built in 1864 as the Hector, she initially served the east coast of the USA during the Civil War era. She sailed for many years as a packet steamer on Lake Erie, until sinking and being re-built as a tug. During monumental storms in November 1883 she was sent to an area south of Kincardine, Ontario, Canada to rescue the schooner J. M. Carter which had been blown ashore. While maneuvering offshore it is thought that the water supply to the boiler was cut off, and when restored, superheated steam blew up the boiler and the ship. Four crewmen died. Ironically, the remains of the boiler are still visible, as the naming feature of “Boiler Beach” two miles south of Kincardine. A popular seafood restaurant in Kincardine is named after the ship.” Wellington Osgood’s wife was Annie Teal, married, Oct. 11, 1879, in Detroit. Wellington is buried at Elmwood Cemetery. Research by Paula Shorf.

For Commodore Perry researchers and followers there is a free Google Book. The Perry’s Victory Centenary Report of The Perry’s Victory Centennial Commission, State of New York, Compiled by George D. Emerson, J. B. Lyon Company Printers, 1916. It is very detailed on the Battle of Lake Erie and celebration.
