Welcome to the world, Penelope Opossum!

We're excited to introduce Penelope as the name you choose for our new opossum! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in our contest. This name holds a special meaning, as it was suggested by a sweet former volunteer dedicated to our Animal Care Facility.

Breaking news coming out of the animal room! 📰✨

Get ready to meet the sweetest baby girl opossum this side of President Clinton Ave. I think you’ll agree, our newest animal ambassador is im-poss-ibly cute. She had an accident involving her tail and is unable to be rehabilitated and turned back to the wild. Because of this, we are happy to give her a safe home at the Museum of Discovery. What she lacks in tail, she makes up for in attitude.

We've decided to hold a naming contest to find the perfect name for her! 📇

Send us your suggestions and we’ll let her narrow down the list and decide on her favorites. We’re looking forward to welcoming her into our family as she helps teach our guests about nature and conservation, so let’s give her a name to remember.

It's time for an electrifying midi file rendition of "Happy Birthday" in honor of a very important date. On this day 168 years ago, Nikola Tesla was born. Throughout his life, Nikola made many contributions as an inventor in many different areas, especially in the development of electric power. In fact, Nikola is the creator of the alternating current system of electricity used today. We honor him daily with our Guinness World Records musical bi-polar Tesla Coil, which emits 200,000 volts of electricity and plays various songs at a high frequency visible to the eye. ⚡️🥳✨

Don't miss the chance to experience the unique Tesla show in our Entergy Theater the next time you're at the museum. With showtimes daily, Monday-Friday at 12:30pm and 2:00pm, and Sundays at 2pm, it's a one-of-a-kind celebration of Nikola Tesla's legacy!

We have exciting news to share! 📰🎉

We are thrilled to announce that our founder, Bernie Babcock— author, mother, suffragist, and museum pioneer— is being inducted into the Arkansas Women's Hall of Fame this year!

In 1927, Bernie opened a natural history, curiosities and antiquities museum on Main Street to challenge the notion that Arkansas lacked culture. Her determination saw the museum through the Great Depression, World War II and many challenges, turning the museum into the respected institution it is today.

Today, 97 years later, we believe Bernie would be proud of the Museum of Discovery and its continued dedication to education and culture. We're honored to celebrate her legacy with this achievement.

Welcome to the 2024 class of Discovery Camp Counselors! We’re three weeks into summer camp at the museum and our 76 counselors from 20 different schools are pivotal to our success. Ranging from entering 9th graders to seniors, our counselors assist museum educators and help empower campers to problem-solve in order to achieve their goals.

This program offers teens a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork by helping guide groups of children. They also develop patience, initiative, and empathy, all while enhancing their adaptability and confidence. Plus it's fun! These skills are invaluable for their future endeavors and we love watching them grow year after year!

Next time you're at the museum, don't miss the chance to check out the fantastic MOD-themed mural on the east side of the building created by renowned local artist Matt McLeod. This piece was sponsored by PPG as part of its Colorful Connections program, installed by Baldwin & Shell Construction Company & Shell, and debuted in September 2022. We appreciate these sponsors’ support and Matt’s talent! The museum is proud to be a large and visible part of the growing outdoor art scene downtown. 🎨

"It didn't exist, so I had to make it!" 💁🏼‍♀️

Meet Major Chelsie Jones, a trailblazer who soared above challenges both in the sky and on the ground. When the Air Force lacked maternity suits, she teamed up with her retired seamstress neighbor to design her own, paving the way for future generations of women in uniform. Her ingenuity inspired the creation of official Air Force maternity suits, proving that one woman's innovation can lead to systemic change. Major Chelsie shared her incredible journey with us at the Girls in STEM Leadership Institute, reminding us why representation matters and how one woman's innovation can pave the way for women in the future.
