30 years ago, President Clinton took the stage at the Democratic National Convention to reflect on four years of progress and share his vision for the future.

He called on Americans to “build that bridge to the 21st century,” creating more opportunity for families, helping young people get the education and training they need, protecting the environment and building a safer, more peaceful world.

And as he looked ahead, he returned to a message that had defined his political journey: “I still believe in a place called Hope, a place called America.”

30 years later, we’re looking back at that moment and the enduring call to meet new challenges without leaving our greatness behind.

The title he is most proud to hold: citizen.

On January 18, 2001, President Bill Clinton delivered his farewell address from the Oval Office.

After eight years in office, he reflected on the responsibility of public service and what it means to remain committed to your country beyond the presidency.

“I will never hold a position higher or a covenant more sacred than that of President of the United States. But there is no title I will wear more proudly than that of citizen.”

As we celebrate President Clinton’s 80th birthday, we’re closing out our look back at some of his defining moments from his presidency and the lasting legacy of service, opportunity and hope.
