Appearing on THV11's The Vine this morning for "Artifact Friday" was our very own Supervisory Curator, Stephanie Sims!

Stephanie shared with host Adam Bledsoe how and why AmeriCorps was established and its mission to promote community service by encouraging all Americans to volunteer and contribute to their communities. In 1994, President Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act to encourage everyone to volunteer and view MLK Day as “a day on, not a day off.”

The bookcase was created by AmeriCorps volunteers in 1998 for school-age children for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

🌟 New Alert! 🌟

Discovering these icons was a delightful accident while searching for a different item, especially given the proximity of Christmas. Although these icons do not directly depict the Nativity, they evoke strong symbolism surrounding the birth through their portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus.

This first icon portrays the Virgin Mary seated at the center, cradling a young Jesus, surrounded by eight standing men, two of whom kneel at her feet. Each figure is adorned with a striking golden Riza, except for Jesus, whose Riza shines silver. The Russian names of these figures are etched onto the ornate golden halos. The background showcases a crafted floral pattern, hammered and stamped, which recurs throughout the piece.

This second icon is adorned with white and blue cloisonné enamel, featuring depictions of Mary holding the infant Jesus, alongside an adult Christ. Positioned below them are three distinguished figures identified as St. Nicholas, Archangel Michael, and John the Baptist, each carrying symbolic items—a book, a sword, and a staff, respectively. Each figure is adorned with a white and blue cloisonné enamel Riza.
