OTD 50 years ago, President Clinton won the 1976 Democratic Primary for Attorney General of Arkansas. There was no Republican candidate so he ran unopposed in the November general election. Clinton was sworn into to his first statewide office on January 3, 1977.

Did you know that President Clinton in his plans for the Presidency wanted to Build One America, a place where we respect others' differences and, at the same time, embrace the common values that unite us? President Clinton fought for equal opportunities for all. In 1999 an executive order was signed to improve the quality of life for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. He also helped start the annual meeting for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, which is where this photo was taken in Seattle, Washington.

President Clinton signs Executive Order 13125, Increasing Participation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Federal Programs. The signing ceremony took place in the Oval Office on June 7, 1999.

This moment symbolized Washington’s commitment to “the United States of America, to be Free, Independent and Sovereign States, and declare that the people thereof owe no allegiance or obedience to George the Third, King of Great Britain.”
