A real World War II submarine in Arkansas lets visitors climb aboard, explore the cramped interior, and even spend the night.

On this day in 1946, the USS Arkansas (BB-33) sank during the second “Baker” test (pictured here), a submerged detonation from ninety feet below the ocean’s surface. Because of its age, the Arkansas had been selected for the atomic naval tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It had survived the first atomic naval test of “Test Able” on July 1. The Arkansas now rests in 170 feet of water in the Bikini Atoll lagoon, where it is often inspected by recreational deep sea divers. USS Razorback (SS-394), a Balao-class submarine, 22 July 1944 departed Midway Island for patrol in the Okhotsk Sea, where she sank six wooden cargo sea trucks, used to transport fuel and weapons, and damaged two in a surface gun action. The remainder of the patrol was spent performing lifeguard services off Paramushiro for Alaska-based planes.

On 31 August Razorback entered Tokyo Bay with 11 other submarines to take part in the formal Japanese surrender. She departed 3 September, arrived at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 11 September and San Diego, California on 20 September.

Razorback earned five battle stars for World War II service, four campaign stars for Vietnam War service and two awards of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
