Join us for the opening of the ESMoA Zine Team's PEACE Exhibition, a celebration of everything our summer cohort has been building since June.

All summer, each participant developed their own artwork. Those pieces have been brought together into a single collaborative zine: one book, many hands, many ways of seeing the same idea: PEACE.

Come see the work, meet the artists, and support local South Bay talent. Small bites served throughout the evening, and every guest takes home a free zine.

Join us for an artist talk with Cole Sternberg at ESMoA

Cole Sternberg reflects on his recent journey to the Arctic Circle, where he continued his practice of placing his work in direct conversation and collaboration with the environment. Moving between this singular experience and the broader evolution of his practice, Sternberg will discuss how water, wind, weather, and time function not simply as subjects but as active participants in making his work.

The Arctic brings these ideas into sharp focus: a landscape of immense beauty and apparent permanence that is, at the same time, undergoing profound environmental transformation and occupying an increasingly tenuous geopolitical position. Through images, stories, and works made along the journey, the talk explores the shifting relationship between human intention and natural forces and how our attempts to observe, alter, preserve, and understand the environment reveal the complex nature of our place within it.

Saturday, September 12 | 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM

2026 ESMoA Video Art + Film Festival: FREEDOM
Free Screening + Award Ceremony!

We're excited to be partnering with the Wende Museum to bring EVAFF to the A-Frame Theater, part of their new 7,500 sq. ft. Community Center. The project reactivated a long-disused theater into a state-of-the-art space for film, learning, and gathering, and like everything at the Wende, all programming there is free and open to the public. "Wende" is German for "turning point," which makes it a fitting home for a festival built around FREEDOM. One night of selected shorts across film, animation, and video art, followed by the announcement of this year's awards. Each year's award plaque is designed by a different LA-based artist.

Founded in 2017, EVAFF is a free annual international festival open to filmmakers of all ages and experience levels. Each year we invite artists to respond to a single theme in 60 seconds. ESMoA (Experimentally Structured Museum of Art) is a public non-profit run by the artlab21 Foundation in Lawndale, CA. We've hosted over 2,000 free programs and 60+ Experiences, reaching more than 140,000 visitors across LA County. Always free admission, always free programs.

Last week, we set off on a soundwalk led by artist Brittney Franco a workshop built to resist cultural and historical erasure by recording personal and community stories through sound, memory, and place.

After a short intro on archives and documentation, guests drew prompts from a jar and headed out into Lawndale on a listening-based walk. Using their phones and Polaroid printers, they captured the sounds and images of their own neighborhood visiting local parks and businesses near ESMoA to document our place in time. Along the way, many of us grew more aware of the sounds that surround us every day, building a living archive of personal and collective memory.

A huge thank you to the local businesses that welcomed us into their spaces, to our community for walking alongside us, and to Brittney Franco for her guidance and for leading such a meaningful experience. 💜
