The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located on seven acres atop Mabry's Hill in Knoxville,TN. Built in 1858 and housing three generations of the same family from 1858-1987, the Mabry-Hazen House was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. This stately, elegant home characteristic of the Victorian and Civil War periods sho

wcases one of the largest original family collection in America. Containing original artifacts including East Tennessee marble, silver, personal family possessions, and antique furnishings, this home is a rare view into the past. The Civil War, a gunfight on Gay Street in 1882, and a Breach of Promise lawsuit in the early 1930's are only a few stories that bring life and color to those who visit the museum.

Saturday marks a major seasonal change in Knoxville. It's Football time in Tennessee. 🏈

And while the field, uniforms, and rules have changed since Evelyn Hazen attended UT, Volunteer football remains Knoxville's favorite sport!

These images from the 1916 Vols season were published in the 1917 UT yearbook. Over the course of that season, the 1916 team rang up a 8-0-1, with the only blemish, a scoreless draw against Kentucky State (now Kentucky) in the final game of the year.

The yearbook gleefully announced the Vols had scored 168 points over the course of the season while holding their opponents to a measly 19 points scored against them. Among their eight victories was a close one at home against then football powerhouse, Vanderbilt. The victory marked the first time a a Tennessee team beat the highly rated Commodores in Knoxville. Despite their unbeaten record, the scoreless deadlock against Kentucky cost them a share of the Southern Conference title.

Until the 1921 season, the Vols played their home games at Waite Field, located the near the corner of 15th (present day Phillip Fulmer Way) and Cumberland, where the Walters Life Science Building stands today. Evelyn attended a few home games that season, including seeing the first homecoming football game in UT history when they hosted Vandy. Due to US entry into World War I in April 1917, Tennessee did not field another varsity squad until 1919.

The 2026 Volunteers may struggle to keep their opponents from only scoring 19 points but we certainly hope they hit 8 wins!

In its nine years, the award-winning and popular A Victorian SĂ©ance Experience program has grown beyond the parlors and hallways of Mabry-Hazen House and evolved into an event across Mabry’s Hill exploring local and general history of the macabre, the occult, and the supernatural. đŸ‘»

From tarot readings and Halloween vendors to themed silent films to scary story readings and more, our immersive theater experience has grown into a spooky exposition to explore and understand the history of Americans’ fascination with death, the afterlife, ghosts, and the esoteric. 🔼

With its expanded activities and aims, we feel a frightful new title was in order. 🎃

We are thrilled to announce Mabry-Hazen House’s Festival of Phantasmagoria featuring A Victorian Seance Experience and House of Tarot! The Festival of Phantasmagoria is free to enter, featuring A Victorian SĂ©ance Experience, House of Tarot, Silent Films, Presenters, and Music. Certain attractions are ticketed.

The Festival will be in the evening each day starting on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and running through Sunday, Nov. 1. The event will run from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

The Festival of Phantasmagoria draws its inspiration from 18th- and 19th-century horror theater that used magic lanterns to suggest supernatural and ghoulish phenomena. While smoke and mirrors created an eerie experience then, this festival exhibits those spooky, fascinating cultural histories through film, storytelling, theater, special exhibits, and personal experiences.

This eerie American history runs through the experiences of Mabry-Hazen House’s residents, and the museum aims to share a deeper understanding of these macabre, yet fascinating, cultural experiences.

Tickets will go on sale for Mabry-Hazen House Members on Monday, Sept. 14, and to the general public on Monday, Sept. 28. Tickets and more information can be found at www.mabryhazen.com/seance.

Heyyyy youuuuu guuuuys! The treasure of Mabry-Hazen House can be found without a map! You and your group of best buds can enjoy a whole CHUNK of lawn together, glory in the golden hour, and see a classic movie for free. Work together to get all your friends to Movies at the Museums: The Goonies presented by Pellissippi State Community College next Friday evening, September 4, at Mabry-Hazen House!

Doors open at 7 pm for historic house walkthroughs; the movie starts at 8 pm. No admission fee, although donations are appreciated! Concessions will be sold. All proceeds benefit Mabry-Hazen House.

Our time with our summer interns has come to an end and parting is bittersweet! These bright, ambitious, and dedicated emerging museum professionals contributed in meaningful and significant ways towards the museum's efforts. From giving guided tours anda telling the histories of the house with diverse guests to documenting, organizing, and archiving letters, clothes, books, random ephemera, and even cosmetics and toiletries, these five interns helped us with the important work of sharing and preserving the history and collection of Mabry-Hazen House. Beyond their archival and tour guide duties, their enthusiasm and attitudes were a delightful part of the staff's work day and a reminder the next generation of museum pros is in good hands.

We were honored they dedicated a part of their summer to learn from us and give their time and talent to the historic house museum. We're also humbled to see the work we do at Mabry-Hazen House draws students from excellent schools like College of Charleston, Louisiana State University, Smith College, Trinity College Dublin, and University of San Francisco!

And while we're sad to see them go, we can't wait to see the impact they'll have on the museum field in their future work! We wish them all the absolute best in their endeavors!

Movies at the Museums kicks off in two weeks here at Mabry-Hazen House with The Goonies!

Presented by Pellissippi State Community College, we'll have a FREE showing of the 1985 classic adventure comedy on Friday, Sept. 4. Doors open at 7 PM, and the movie will start at 8 PM.

The Goonies features young, familiar stars such as Sean Austin, Josh Brolin, and Ke Huy Quan. A tight-knit group of kids discovers a pirate's treasure map and embarks on a journey to find the riches that could save their homes from foreclosure

As we continue to process objects found during our recent bottom floor renovation, we want to share our findings from the mundane to the odd to the unique. In this case, it's a little of all three as we've been processing the remnants of Evelyn Hazen's bathroom cabinet. 🛀

What was in Miss Evelyn's bathroom cabinet when she died in 1987? Well it turns out, a lot, ranging from laxatives to “Endocreme Liquid” to hand cream, powder base, and an unfortunately open tube of Stripe toothpaste. She even has a little container of Carter’s Little Liver Pills, from before they had to take the “Liver” out of the name. Like many of us, she seems to have kept some things which ought to have gone in the bin, like a jar of Pepto-Bismol whose contents have remained the same pink color since it arrived in this house, probably in the 1940s, and more than 6 boxes of eye drops for both her and her cats.

These objects posit fascinating, occasionally challenging, questions about what, how, and why we preserve the objects we do at Mabry-Hazen House. But one the of the big lessons we learned is a spoonful of history helps the medicine go down!⚕ 😄
