**CHAPTER FIVE: KEISHLA HE — PROUDLY BORICHINA**
Born and raised in Puerto Rico to parents who immigrated from China, **Keishla He** represents a Boricua identity too often overlooked in popular culture. Spanish is her native language, Cantonese connects her with her family, and the rhythms, humor and experiences of Puerto Rico shaped the woman she became. She proudly calls herself **“Borichina”**—not half of one identity and half of another, but fully Chinese and fully Puerto Rican.
Her parents established a restaurant on the island, while Keishla grew up navigating questions from people who could not reconcile her Asian appearance with her unmistakably Puerto Rican voice and upbringing. Rather than allowing those assumptions to define her, she transformed them into comedy, cultural commentary and an opportunity to educate.
Keishla began creating Spanish-language TikTok videos during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, initially using her platform to confront the xenophobia and anti-Asian racism intensified by the virus. Her videos soon went viral as viewers watched her move naturally between Spanish, Cantonese and English while explaining the multicultural reality of her life.
Today, she has built an audience of **more than one million TikTok followers**, tens of millions of likes and over **200,000 Instagram followers**. Through family interactions, lifestyle videos and sharp observations about identity, Keishla challenges the narrow idea that Puerto Ricans must possess one particular appearance, surname or ancestral background.
Puerto Rican identity has never been racially uniform. It is a living culture shaped by Indigenous, African, European, Asian and other migrations—and belonging is not determined by whether a stranger thinks someone “looks Puerto Rican.” Keishla’s story reminds us that **Boricua identity is lived, spoken, inherited and loved—not measured by somebody else’s stereotype.**

**CAPÍTULO CINCO: KEISHLA HE — ORGULLOSAMENTE BORICHINA**
Nacida y criada en Puerto Rico de padres que emigraron desde China, **Keishla He** representa una identidad boricua que demasiadas veces queda fuera de la cultura popular. El español es su idioma nativo, el cantonés la conecta con su familia y los ritmos, el humor y las experiencias de Puerto Rico formaron a la mujer que es hoy. Ella se describe orgullosamente como **“Borichina”**—no como mitad de una identidad y mitad de otra, sino plenamente china y plenamente puertorriqueña.
Sus padres establecieron un restaurante en la isla, mientras Keishla crecía enfrentando las preguntas de quienes no podían reconciliar su apariencia asiática con su voz y crianza inconfundiblemente Puertorriqueñas. En vez de permitir que esas suposiciones la definieran, las convirtió en comedia, comentario cultural y una oportunidad para educar.
Keishla comenzó a publicar videos en español en TikTok durante la pandemia de COVID-19 en 2020. Inicialmente utilizó su plataforma para enfrentar la xenofobia y el racismo antiasiático que se intensificaron durante aquel periodo. Sus videos pronto se hicieron virales al verla cambiar naturalmente entre español, cantonés e inglés mientras explicaba la realidad multicultural de su vida.
Hoy ha construido una comunidad de **más de un millón de seguidores en TikTok**, decenas de millones de “me gusta” y más de **200,000 seguidores en Instagram**. Mediante interacciones familiares, videos sobre su vida y observaciones inteligentes sobre la identidad, Keishla desafía la idea limitada de que una persona puertorriqueña tiene que poseer determinada apariencia, apellido o ascendencia.
La identidad Puertorriqueña nunca ha sido racialmente uniforme. Es una cultura viva formada por raíces indígenas, africanas, europeas, asiáticas y otras migraciones. Ser boricua no depende de que un desconocido piense que alguien “parece Puertorriqueño.” La historia de Keishla nos recuerda que **la identidad boricua se vive, se habla, se hereda y se ama—no se mide mediante los estereotipos ajenos.**
